Weekend Update 2/21/21

I've started illuminating certain buildings, including the yard office, switch tower, machine shop, freight depot and the passenger station, with more on the way. It does a nice job of keeping me distracted from the abysmal weather and my health problems. Plus I retrofitted the yard light with LEDs. It was easier to do than I thought, principally because 3mm LEDs exactly fit the shades. Before, left; after, right.

   

I've started on the quasi-retro scenery, laying down a layer of pre-colored, pre-mixed sanded grout for terrain.

I've been focused (no photo pun intended) on photographing the layout for an upcoming article using newly downloaded Helicon focus stacking software.  Tip of the cap to @dougnelson for his description in the Photography forum of how he achieves multiple focus points on an Iphone.

Very nicely done & beautifully fitted. Looks really good.

When I see how much work it takes to fit a complicated styrene track crossing, the more I like my spackling compound method. Spread & let set, define edges with hobby knife, let dry, sand flush with railhead, cut flangeways with hobby knife, paint & clean rails... done. This method works for every type of crossing from smooth highway crossing to a rough country gravel road crossing. I’m not saying my method is better, it just fits my modeling skill set better. It also makes modeling potholes & cracked/broken pavement really easy.

By the way... have any of you N or Z scalers ever gone to a lot of effort to model a particular small feature or texture detail only to find you can’t tell the difference without an optivisor when you’re done?

There seems to be a Model Railroading/Musician/Academia triple combo (pun intended) on RW also.  I am spending the day grading Business Law final essay exams, working on the fire escapes on the ITLA factory that I have been working on since November but the drums are idle due to the lack of gigs.  I have played everything from symphonic to Dixieland, a lot of 60-70's rock and my primary focus is community musical theater which is at a standstill.

I have been able to enjoy playing classical guitar (untrained) accompaniment for my Granddaughter's flute pieces, though.

Many years ago I played drums once or twice in the rhythm section of an ALL trombone Big Band.  We probably have enough RW trombone players to pull that off.

Bass trombone, eh?  ABSOLUTELY!!!  High school and university in Michigan and Community Band for going on 31 years.  Still love it.

Well Beethoven did refer to the trombone as the king of the orchestra, and I highly value the trombone players in my Senior Concert Band and Senior Jazz Ensemble.  I recall two occasions when I met Bill Watrous; always loved his playing.  My own calling is clarinet and bass clarinet in our local West Coast Symphony.

This past week was spent opening up the side windows and installing the inside window sash, all the while hoping to maintain a .020" inset behind for the window panes:




Also drilling holes and forming wire for the vertical handholds while the parts are still flat on the workbench, and drilling holes for the underframe brake appliances.




Preparation for trucks and couplers are next, so that I can fabricate and add the end sills.
