OFF THE WALL QUESTION for a computer
« on: October 22, 2020, 01:05:19 PM »

I don’t know where to ask this so move if necessary.
I have a PC running Windows 10, I use outlook for my e-mails.
Now the problem-the last Windows up date has caused the WIFI to turn off- I see where this has been noted by others.
Microsoft no longer provides phone support- on line only- I did not see a place where I could solve my problem-
When the WIFI turns off it disables my wireless keyboard too- I have to use on screen keyboard to even sign in.
Next computer will be a MAC I think.
I know there are lot’s of computer wizards out there- any help on this?
Thanks in advance.

Can’t help, I’m a dinosaur with this stuff, but will be interested in a response as well from someone who is more savvy on these things than me before I accept next win10 update.
BTW, My win98SE laptop still works fine in all respects.  Maybe because it is no longer supported by MS and thus immune from them updating/fixing stuff just to break something else. 😉

Click on the Start icon on the taskbar then click on settings (cog wheel thingy, click on Network and Internet then click on wifi on the left column, move the slider to on where it says wifi.
Blue tooth is turned on in a different place:
click on start, settings then click on devices then click on Bluetooth and other devices slide the slider to on.

I have turned that off more times that I can count- still shuts down WIFI- GO and look at that setting and it’s off again?
What really gripes me is this is some thing to do with the up dates MS does- now I can not even get support except 0n line- none of the cues direct me to a place to fix.
Like I said before - next putter will be a Mac, I’m sure.
Still would like to find where this is hidden.

I don't know about your issue. But you may need to going into "services" and shut stuff off in there to keep it from turning back on.

I still cannot believe there is no Windows 10 class action lawsuit.

Hi Woodone,
I'm by no means an expert on this, but the web seems to suggest trying the following:

1. Go to settings/network&internet and use the troubleshooter to see if it can find the source of the problem - maybe?

2. Go to settings/network&internet and find your wireless device (adapter options) and click 'configure' and uncheck the box marked "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

3. Go to start/windows administrative tools and click on "services" - then scroll down until you see "WLAN autoconfig" and see if it is marked as "automatic" under the column "startup type" and it is running. If it is not - then right click on it and open "properties" and change it to "automatic". Then start it up....

4. reboot - cross fingers.

Sometimes a Microsoft update will change a few variables that might require updated drivers for your wireless device. You can search for them online, if you can get connected. Let us know if any of this works/doesn't work and if any of the above needs clarification
Cheers,
Scott

Jerry,

Not sure if you’ve tried any of these suggestions

https://pureinfotech.com/fix-wifi-problems-windows-10-20h2/

I haven’t seen any issues on any of my PCs (yet)

This is why I'm still running "7" with "updates" turned off. Been that way for several years now with no problems.

I still cannot believe there is no Windows 10 class action lawsuit.
I agree. Most of the problems my wife has had with her new Dell is due to W10.
I'm about ready to load W7 on it and be done with it.

You could probably get a good price on a used Mac. I bought my iMac new 7 years ago, use it daily for work, and it's never given me any trouble. My OS is three years old too. Only issue with iMACs I can tell is that the internal battery will eventually need to be replaced and that it's not easy to do yourself. According to www.macrumors.com, new iMAC models are scheduled for release at the end of 2020.

I have an iMac that is several years old. I’ve had it in the shop twice in that time. The first was a weird failure of the motherboard. Then recently, my wife tried to download a software update (for MS Word - go figure), and the iMac locked up, refused to load the update, panic & chaos ensued... wife yelled at me (downstairs asleep in my tire swing minding my own business). So I do what I can... not much... turn off & try to restart. Goes reeeeeeeal ssssssssslow, but reboots. However won’t load or open anything. Load up & take to shop. They ask... What’s wrong? My response... It’s broke... make it unbroken.

Yesterday they called... found some corrupted code which they fixed and recommended replacing the original hard drive (due to age) and suggested upgrading to SSD because new software supposedly performs better on SSD’s. Cost difference wasn’t bad so agreed.

Jump to the chase... I now have what is acting like a brand new computer. Boots up wayyyyy faster. Loads programs almost instantly, etc. Basically, I like Apple/Mac gear because I don’t have an IT department at home, and it typically just works.

Wife’s happy... so happy wife, happy life.

Let me expand on my wow’s. I have been fighting this for about a month- two weeks ago my phone service stoped working(land line)
All my internet-phone and cable TV is with one server. Cox. So I used my cell to get service tech to come to the house to trouble shoot-
They showed up about 4:30 PM at which time the phone started to work again? They checked the inputs on the out side of house a said every thing checked good, but when the saw the modem they told me it was out of date and would replace it. Well they did not have the correct modem on the truck and told me I would have to go to the Cox store for a replacement-this was on a Friday. I installed the new modem on Saturday AM. Fired it up and every thing worked- come Saturday afternoon (5:00 PM ) and I had no internet connection.
When you call Cox today your wait time on hold to get a tech on the line is about 12 to 15 minutes - I decided to wait until Sunday to try to get help. I awoke very early Sunday AM(3;00 AM ). I called the server and was told (voice recording) that there was an outage in my service area, be back up at 11:0- AM. AFTER 4 called I finally got some one to send a service tech to the house again. I had to wait 2 days for them to show up- after checking out every thing outside tech came inside still no internet-after checking several things he said-Iam going to switch out the modem- Bingo Internet now works.
But I still get the WIFI OFF.
I am not real good with the computer ins and outs I have tried several,of the things noted by the helpful people who have replied.
I am not too keen on clicking on some check box with out under standing what it does- so in some cases I have not tried all,the thing noted above.
Sorry long post but wanted to let you know where I am.
Thanks for the input.

Don't really know anything about Mac computers, but so far only about 11% of computers are Macs.

I can't help with the specific question, but I can give a more general observation about Mac v. Windows.

I use both, for both work and non-work activities, including modeliing.  Because the Mac is essentially a closed system (Apple designs all the hardware; licenses all the software; etc.) both software and hardware (e.g., external drives, USB devices, etc.) are much more likely to work without fiddling on a Mac.  But at the end of the day, neither system is exactly intuitive, and both can have issues.

The one thing I'd point out is that there are programs that are Windows-only.  For example the ESU LokProgrammer software is Windows-only; my wife's embroidery-design software is Windows-only, and so forth.  Before you ditch a Windows machine for a Mac, make absolutely sure that the programs you use are available for the Mac platform.  Yes, there are emulator programs that allow you to run Windows from the MacOS; my hat is off to the people that can get them running.  Talk about problems!

On the other hand, you can set up a Mac to run both the MacOS and Windows via a dual-boot installation (not an emulator).  So from a hardware perspective, a Mac (like the iMac I'm writing this message on) is more flexible.  But even setting up a dual boot system isn't as easy as some would have you believe.

Just don't buy a Mac because you think that magically all your computer glitches will disappear.  They won't.

I have a small non-Mac laptop for Microsoft based software and I used Windows based computers at work before I retired 😃, but one thing is much easier on Windows than on a Mac. It’s much easier to accidentally delete a document on your Windows computer than on a Mac.

Wireless keyboards are Bluetooth devices.  While that is a wireless interface (like WiFi). it is totally separate and different from WiFi.

Not sure if this applies here, but if both WiFi and Bluetooth (wireless kbd.) drop off, I wonder if your computer (you didn't say if it is a desktop, laptop, or maybe a tablet?) is going into "airplane mode". That is usually used on laptops and it disables all wireless interfaces on the computer (as if you were going to use on an airplane, where they want all the radio transmissions disabled).
