They're there. They're just striped too.

The paint scheme is the same as this:

In fact, the famous 1223 is the same class of locomotive (a D16) although mine is the "flatland" version with larger diameter drivers.

Ed, does the engine in post #82 have counter balances on her drivers ? Is it that they are painted-on spokes that I can't see them ?
The Connie's balances in post #14 are painted with gold spokes but are visible. Not sure of the beautiful American, though.  M
