Weekend Update 8/16/20

Completed my N scale newsstand project.  My big question prior to starting this project was could I create N scale magazines.  Success.  The stack of newspapers on the crate is actually an image of the front page of the Huntingdon (PA) Daily News.  No, you can't read it, but take my word for it.  Lighting is WS Just Plug system.  It is not cheap, but it is a well designed system and the rheostat to control individual lighting levels is critical for proper lighting levels for photography. Credit to Vic Roseman for his series of articles on HO newsstands in Mainline Modeler from 2005.  Also inspiration from DKS that there isn't anything we can't do in N scale.  Candy anyone?

After the rust patches fully dried, I used a damp brush in a downward motion to steak it. Best of all, if you mess up, you can simply remove all of it with water.

I removed the rust from the left side on that last photo.

Still needs a bit more experimenting but I think it's promising.

Looks really good.  I wonder if you could just mist with water in an airbrush (and perhaps add a dash of acrylic thinners or dishsoap to lessen surface tension) and just let them streak naturally?  Just a thought, looks really good as-is.

Have you learned to speak any Polish (beyond the basic "budka" or "dupa")?

I don't know any sources of small Polish flags, but it is a very simple flag (if we are talking the Cold War era. Just white over red.  Current flag also has a coat of arms (Polish eagle) in the center of the white field.  The simple flag can be done with just a piece of paper and red marker.  The one with the eagle could be printed on any color printer. Just print bots sides spread out and then fold it so it is double sided.

I got some 0201 SMDs a few months back and I finally put them to use on CP 9022 adding step well and frame lights. They're not perfect, but I think they look good enough.

Haven't learned much, honestly. My Babci tried teaching me a bit when I was a kid but I'm terrible with languages. My knowledge is the Polish equivalent of Taco Bell Spanish: pierogi, kielbasa, chrusciki, etc...

The marker is a great idea for the flag. I was thinking of printing one but was struggling with how to get it lined up for double sidedness. That solves the issue. Thanks!

The wiring is nothing fancy. The ditch lights are wired to F1, the step lights wired to F3, and the head light wired to F0. I used a Digitrax DN136K1C decoder and 1.2K ohm resisters for the LEDs.

Reese, I think this is the first time ever I've seen anybody model working step lights. Nice job!   On 1:1 locos those lights seem much dimmer than the headlights.  They probably used bulbs similar to parking lights in automobiles. If I were to do step lights I would have likely used a higher value resistor, to make them less bright.  I'm thinking 5.1k, 10k or maybe even higher.  Another way to tone them down could  be to paint the entire LED black, then scratch a small hole in the paint, so only a small amount of light gets through.

As for the flag with the coat of arms, you could just print it one-sided, fold it around the pole  , and use some white glue to glue both sides together. Perfect alignment. Many model flags are printed that  way.  Yeah, it will be double thick, but that should be ok. Or if you really want a thin flag, print it on some white decal paper and use just the decal film for scale thickness flag.

Nice work, Nate.  The world needs more modelers doing cars from sides and cores.

Whose sides are those?  In some ways, they look like Union Station plastic sides, but then, I know JnJ and M&R both did that car in metal.  I have some of the JnJ that have almost a mirror finish (more like polished chrome than stainless steel), so I am also interested in what you did to get the finish you have there, which looks like it will mix with Kato cars better than the JnJ plating I have.

Maybe that's the answer to my first question (it's USP sides).
I have a 2 page instruction sheet that came with sides I bought many years ago- there was a second version that utilized 3M 45 spray glue to attach fluting (and that is the way I have done it), but haven't found a copy of that.  This is my first try with an "attachment" on Railwire, so here's hoping....  PS- type is very small, but I was surprised to find it scanned pretty well, so should be legible but you might need to zoom in.
