1952 California Zephyrs!

AZL is proud to offer the legendary California Zephyr operated jointly by the CB&Q, D&RGW and WP between Chicago and Oakland. VERY nice!  Except for the couplers, Z scale seems to have caught up with N.  And there's not much that can be done about the couplers, if one wants affordable, reliable, and durable couplers.

Are there prices anywhere? Or is it a case of "if you have to ask..."  :D

until those units go into a curve and those truck-mounted pilots swing out from the frame...

Are the pilots removable?  I body mounted the pilot on one of the original Kato/Con-Cor PA-1s in the early 70s, and it worked fine on 18 inch radius curves.  I suspect the same could be done in Z, if the pilot isn't an essential part of the truck frame.

So what you see is the dummy front coupler on the pilot. First the coupler can be removed. This leaves a small hole on the pilot that some have filled to create the flushed look.

AZL has designed to the front pilot to be removed. In the packaging, AZL included an optional truck with coupler. So if you were running the A in the end of the locomotive consist and want it to couple with the rolling stock, you remove the pilot and truck and replace with the spare truck included in the packaging. This way you have truck mounted coupler attached to the train. The solution works great!

AZL has included drawbars as well for the locos. You have to love the close coupling.

Other details include the locos are DCC ready. AZL has a standard PCB in these. Digitrax and TCS both offer drop in decoders that are direct replacement for the boards. The locos also come with traction tires. Also, all locos are powered!
