Quite the model railway week for me this week, and a major milestone for the layout, so lots to post.

Several new pieces of rolling stock joined the fleet on Monday after weathering by Jeff Briggs, including two more CP grain boxcars, a third Hooker Chemicals chlorine tank car, a GATX tank car, and a PGE diesel fuel tank car:

Also joining the fleet is my model of Jordan Spreader BCOL 996301, which is a modified Shapeways printed kit:










On Wednesday I travelled up to the Sunshine Coast to operate on Gord Macdonald's N Scale layout, which depicts the Bloedel, Stewart & Welch's logging operations in the Powell Rive area during the late teens/early twenties:

On Thursday I celebrated the first anniversary of operations on the layout with an Open House in the afternoon, and Op Session 14 in the evening.  We operated on a Mon/Wed schedule (no Dawson Creek Switcher) and ran a passenger extra in lieu.

It is 0200 AM in the morning when the Vancouver-Peace freight rumbles into town past the depot at Chetwynd:




Meanwhile, over on the shop tracks, C-425s 804 and 810 are being readied for the trip to Dawson Creek:




NAR GP-9 203 heads back to the NAR yard at Dawson Creek with cars from the BCR:




The aforementioned Jordan Spreader makes its maiden trip as part of Work Extra 807, seen here crossing the Pine River bridge:




Passenger Extra 804 East prepares to depart the depot at Chetwynd:




Psgr Extra 804 East passes Work Extra 807 at Tremblay:




and performs a photo runby over the Kiskatinaw River bridge:




Engs 607 and 584 arrive in Septimus with cars for Taylor, Fort St. John and Fort Nelson:




Psgr Extra 810 West returns to Chetwynd across the Pine River bridge:




The advent of summer holidays brings an opportunity to tackle some more layout and modelling projects in the coming weeks.

I've got a new addition to the sub.  Thought about this one for quite a while.  At left in this shot is the last part to be added, and in the distance the new addition.  That valley just called to me...



Now we move in a bit closer:



This is all scratched and built referencing Google Maps and Street View.  The Keene Post office at left, and the landmark Keene Cafe center.



I'm calling the scene complete although there are a few more details I want to add...The post office, like the earlier one at Caliente, has a wall of boxes and a customer service window.



I can't believe how much pleasure these projects have given me.  Now on to the Briggs Coil Cars (when they get here!).

Started working on NS 116.  The tender has received a TrueScale coupler and is in the process of getting Bachmann tender trucks to match what the prototype had.

I also did the front handrails on SAL 1416 in .008" phosphor bronze wire.

REALLY nice work on the handrails, Mairi, the corner radii look just right!

I found some .009" stainless in 6 foot lengths for similar needs.

What did you use for stanchions on the hood handrail?

I was one of the lucky few who had a chance to attend Tim's (BCR 570) open house on Thursday. The layout is a great example of fine craftsmanship and use of space. It's tucked neatly into an apartment sized bedroom but offers full proto operating potential. Tim has captured the essence of the BCR in northern BC. I was very impressed by his attention to creating a rolling stock collection that is specific to the time and place. I've gently teased Tim over his fetish for tidiness on his railwire posts but it's really paid off well for him.

Meanwhile, in my basement, work continues. This weekend looks like it's going to be dedicated to reforestation as I install the hundreds of trees stripped of the old layout during the move. Satisfying but boring.
