i have searched the internet (hobby stores...ebay...all the usual places)
and have not found any in stock

does anyone know of a supplier from whom i might order some?

not wanting to use brushes and springs from a new motor
and not finding a new motor that will fit this repair

A long time ago I remember using lead from a pencil but the problem with that is getting the right hardness.

Would the replacement motor brushes sold by either Kato or Bachmann fit the Con-Cor/Rivarossi motor?

For years I made brushes for an old electric razor from a worn-out traction motor brush, found in the BN dump at Pasco.  You could probably make your own from an industrial motor brush, and given the size of our brushes, the cost per brush wouldn't be that high.

What shape are the brushes? Cylindrical or square/rectangular?  Length and other dimensions?  There are lots of brushes out there for N scale model motors. Kato/Atlas have cylindrical brushes while old Bachmann, Fleischmann, Minitrix and some others use square brushes.

Did you try buying direct from the Kato or Bachmann websites?

Isn't this the Rivarossi 2-8-8-2 that has the rather large round can motor at the rear?

A Mashima 1220 should fit there just fine.   Honestly, before I would try saving that old motor, I'd just replace it.
If you just do a web search for "Mashima 1220", you will find a lot of places that still have them - many are in the UK, but so what?

The motor ain't cheap - will probably cost $40 or so, but it's far better than the motor that was in there before.

Plan B:
If you measure the size of your old motor, I'll check my stash of old Sagamis.  I probably have something that would fit, and those were also excellent motors once you got to the 12mm and larger diameters.  (The 10mm Sagamis weren't so great.).

Gary:  Any industrial supply that sells electric motors should have, or have a source for, brushes.  The smaller ones will be all you need.  I remember the ones out of the 1960s-era tape drives on my first job's computer were about half an inch square by an inch long, when new, with a spring attached to one end.  We had to change a few of them in the 6 years I was there.

If it is the original Rivarossi can motor, there are or were HO scale slot car brushes that are an exact fit except for maybe length. I used to buy some made for Tyco or Life-Like cars and distributed by Wizzard.

Here:  https://www.wizzardho.com/products/MattelParts.htm

ST04   Stock Tyco Brush Springs-2 pr.

ST02   Stock Tyco Motor Brushes

The Life-Like ones were LLS02 but I don't see them listed now. I guess you could call to see if any others are the same diameter. They can always be cut to length.
