Newport & Rock Falls: Another Retro Micro-Layout

Applied some technology to the old gal yesterday.

I ordered a few 9v DC wall warts and added battery snaps to provide steady power to the layout.





Now I can run longer trains with more power without burning through a gazillion batteries.

Once again trains can run all day while I'm working, and I can still revert to battery power when I exhibit it at a show.

Can I drop your name at my local ReStore so I can get deals like that?  They be wantin' $50 for that cabinet here...

That particular cabinet was hanging on the wall in the ersatz kitchen the prior owner of my house installed.  (the house was largely unfinished, but there was enough "there" there for them to sell it  I'm sure it came from the ReStore about 15 years ago...  And given what I paid for my new cabinets, $50 is a steal!  Oh, and the $5 got me the casters, by the way.  I felt pretty blessed to have found four that matched!

A good strategy is to haunt your local kitchen remodeler.  They're always taking out cabinets, and usually love it when you can save them a trip to the dump.

I did get a ReStore deal on this cabinet, which is being deployed as part of the Hi Rail layout expansion:


$40 for a 42" tall corner base cabinet.  A real oddball, but look how nicely it fits the roundhouse module!

That’s actually a 42” high wall angle cabinet.  Notice there’s no toekick space at the bottom.  Also, since builder’s grade WALL cabinets are usually 30” high, that’s probably a decently constructed cabinet.

Not so fast, Kitchen Man. 
That's what I thought, too, but it does have a raised floor, and feet on the back.  (Note the space between the bottom of the door and the floor!)  It's also much deeper than a 24" wall corner.  My guess is it was deployed as part of a bar or island of some sort.  But we can argue that point when I get more fully underway on the OTHER layout thread.
