Thought y’all might like a brief glimpse at my most recent Lighting project, improving the lighting of a Kato Daylight Observation car.
I had two major goals, to improve the lighting on the boat tail section of the car where the lighting doesn’t reach, and to have automars on the rear lamp.
The first issue was resolved with a lamp I hand turned from an old clear parts sprue. It has a 402 smd LED and a 1000 ohm 1/8 watt resistor at the decoder end of the negative lead.
The second issue required me to take control of the light board... but to be able to do that I needed to supply an alternate source of lighting for the drumhead. Using the overkill approach, I installed a 1206 smd LED vertically in the tunnel/hump... the lighting may have been overkill, but the mounting was much easier as the sizes are very close.
If I were doing it again, I’d probably try a 603 mounted horizontally with a 1500 ohm resistor as a 1206 w/ 1000 ohm is very very bright!
I needed to make a diffuser and dim the light, I did both with canopy glue. The first layer was pure, and the next one I did mix in a little berry red acrylic with the canopy glue to both diffuse and dim
Everything except the Kato 11-214 kit is powered from an fl4, which itself is piggy backed onto the Kato lighttabs.
