Quick update.
Did some shaping work on the top chord repair.



It looks pretty decent in person. I think I'm going to try some paint on it to see how it REALLY looks and if it needs some Squadron Green Bondo work.

There's also a level of perfection that we go to that even a real railroad would laugh at.

When I was doing my HVRR 5 project, I got one wonderful set of prints of the locomotive just before the railroad was abandoned, 8x10 B&W.

Examination under magnification confirmed that there were fresh bullet holes across the top of the tender.    I did not model that!

Testors makes a tube of filler, it seems to be styrene dissolved in styrene cement, and it wont shrink over time like Squadron..I highly reccomend it.

I think it looks like a repair that could have actually taken place, perhaps after some mishap.

Maybe it's been reformulated recently, but if you're referring to Testors contour putty, then my experience with using it on plastic car models is that it does tend to shrink.

Any 1-part putty which uses solvent will shrink because it hardens by solvent evaporation, not by a chemical reaction (like 2-part putties).

Squadron shrinks over time, getting worse as time goes on. The Testors stuff seems to dry/evaporate very quickly, which I am guessing is when the shrinking will happen. Once the styrene cement is evaporated, only the styrene in it is left behind. So it does shrink at first, sure, but not months, years down the road like Squadron.

I actually used ot make my own filler by dissolving styrene in styrene cement, but having it pre-made in a tube is much more convienient.

I've done Squadron green, Squadron white, Testors, and Tamiya, and Tamiya is by far my favorite, mostly due to color (white) and the fact that it has excellent adhesion and sands out really well. 

But it does shrink.   I've even mixed ACC with styrene dust as an experiment and that works, and doesn't shrink.   Working time is like 3 seconds though.

I'm not TOO worried about shrinkage. I don't have that large of an area to deal with. If anything it'll be like a skim coat.
