20? 15?  Back in the day I last dabbled with Romex, it came in 12 and 14 AWG sizes.

Yeah its 12 and 14. 12 Has a Yellow Jacket and 14 has a White.
But newer rolls are also further colored based on the amount of conductors.
14/3 is now Blue instead of white
12/3 is now Purple instead of yellow
Then Orange is 10/2
Pink 10/3

All smaller is the wild west because that's mostly going into data and telecom.
Anything bigger is black until you get into industrial cables.

I believe it is 14-2 and 12-2 for 15A plug and 20A plug. On either, only if it is split plug for some reason would require a third conductor necessitating -3 wire.

It's 20 amp 12-2 coming from the  panel and split between the two outlets.
The 14-2 goes to an outlet up in the bulkhead that will catch a track light fixture and is operated by a wall switch.

The layout and lighting are on a dedicated circuit.  It'll be  handy downstream if someone decides they want an air  hockey table or a jukebox.

This  ain't my first rodeo.

The gradual shift of focus continues as the pile of vintage toy trains gives way to the new modeling concept.

With the steam fleet more fully fleshed out (mainly with old Rivarossi gear) I thought it would be fun to imagine what the transition might look like on the Laurel Valley.  Having a massive stockpile of Minitrix F units, it was obvious that management would gravitate to EMD as they dipped their toes into the warm waters of new technology.



I need to come up with a nose herald, but otherwise I'm pleased with the outcome.

As usual, bits and bobs came from several different donors, but don't sweat it.  I have enough carcasses to resurrect a bunch more.


The old heads down at the back shops aren't so sure about this.

I had done this quicky patch job on an Atlas caboose that was originally Reading.  I have some Reading logos in a dry transfer set.  I'll see what I can come up with.  Might be too big, but I'll have a look.

Although the black diamond flag could be cool, but I'd need to squeeze an R in there to reduce confusion.... our reporting marks are LRV.

Option 1 - Pin Stripe


Option 2 - Underline


Option 3 - Cigar Band


Option 4 - Reading Style


Personally, I'm leaning toward either Underline or Cigar Band, mainly because I hate applying long pinstripes.  Underline I can mask and paint, and Cigar Band would involve shorter, fatter cuts.  Both can be wrapped around the nose of the A unit.  Underline would also lend itself nicely to the FM switcher I just put in the stripper.

I guess I should open a new thread on the N Scale Page and post a poll.  If everyone selects one I don't want to do, I'll declare fake news and do what I want anyway.

I like the cigar band option but with an EMD "Bow Wave" gentle curve down from the end of where you've ended it to either side of the nose front door down to the anti climber on the A units...

It should be a little fancier back in the transition era!

I like the stripe in Option 1 as at least a part of the snazzied up scheme, because it seems like a thing you’d see from the EMD art designer, especially if you end the stripe under cab window with the arrow point that EMD used a lot.

It may not look like it yet, but this is a major leap forward for the layout construction.  My kitchen is now in my kitchen.


Thus freeing up the basement for additional forward progress toward getting that room finished, and thus leaving the bar downstairs as a vitally important crew facility.
