A normal freight train takes a mile to stop.  So you're saying without the cars the 844 would take more than a mile to stop itself?  That doesn't seem remotely correct.  :?

If they needed something to help stop it, another loco with dynamics would have been better than all those brake shoes and extra weight.

Old timetables often show maximum speeds for various classes of locomotives.  On several I've seen, showing steam locos, the maximum speed was lower for light engines than for ones with trains.  I wonder if, maybe, like the tail of a kite, the train stabilizes the loco, so it doesn't "walk" off the track, from the alternating piston pushes?

Is there a part of the video that shows all the frieght cars?  I didn't have time to watch it straight through.  I caught only a glimpse of one bulkhead with a steel load.

Of course, this blows UP's case for requiring "protection" on excursion runs. :D

Or maybe not, as the freight probably won't get upset if it's late getting back to its motel, or the flight home, or work the next morning.  It will wait patiently for a rescue diesel, while passengers may get restless after a while.
