CNJ green???
« on: March 17, 2018, 11:58:14 PM »

I'm working on 2 locos, one is Atlas RS1 in CNJ green. And I'm preparing a NW2 to paint up for same road. Looking at pics from various sources online, the green seems to be "all over the place", if you know what I mean. I've used Scaleacoat C&NW green for a couple of detail parts added to the RS1. Close, but I wonder how close is the color Atlas used? Saw pix of restored 1554, and it's really deep, and saturated in color. But I'm guessing the green faded over time to something very flat in color. (Those pink ATSF units come to mind.)  Also were the trucks/fuel tanks painted same as body? They are heavily weathered in a lot of archive pix. So, any off the shelf paint, in bottle or rattle can, someone can recommend? Have to wait on the weather till I can use airbrush to mix paints, or spray bomb in the garage.
 Thanks for any help,
 Joe D

The Raritan Bay premixed Scalecoat is no longer available, but this may help:

That link is a big help. Seems I wasn't wrong about color variations, and also starting with C&NW green. Is Raritan Bay Hobbies still around? I'll have to give that # a call.
 Thank you very much,

Sadly, no...  The Model RR Shop in Piscataway  https://themodelrailroadshop.com  might possibly have some of his paint around...

Tru-Color paint lists two versions of CNJ green paint:
TCP-232   CENTRAL NEW JERSEY AUSTERITY GREEN
TCP-233   CENTRAL NEW JERSEY DEEP SEA GREEN

Gee, since Minuteman Scale Models now carries Scalecoat, I wonder if the custom CNJ mix might be available again. I'll try that shop in Piscataway. Saw their ads in Railpace mag.
Point 353, I thought I looked at Trucolor, as I have them bookmarked. Have to look again. Thanks for that heads up. Austerity Green, I love it. That must be the paint that fades to all sorts of variations;)

Gee, since Minuteman Scale Models now carries Scalecoat,

Not just carry it - they actually make it.  If you want some custom color produced, you should contact them.

You tell your creditors, "don't worry, that's austerity green we're using"

Louis,
I've read that the LIRR just goes to Home Depot for paint for the MP15AC's that didn't go to NY&A. And they look it! :(

I ordered Jersey Central Lines in Color v.3, which seemed to describe the era I want. Ron's Books has the Gerard Bernet book, but $60.

Ask at the Model RR Shop if they have the GB book - they may have a better price...

Tell them I sent you, I do their web and social media work.

I might be in there tomorrow (need to pick up my son at Rutgers for dentist appt)  -  I willl see if some of that pain is still gathering dust somewhere.

Joe -

Struck out....     No paint, no decals, no book...

Jack DeRosset, the owner said he had a batch of the books several years ago, but that when Withers dropped it, they had been stored in a barn and were damaged.  He repaired a few - but sold them.

Sorry,

- Lou

Just got off the phone with MinuteMan Scale Models, and they are going to produce CNJ Green and include it in the color chart, next revise. In the meantime, they will mix up a spray bomb and a 1oz bottle for me. Very nice fellow on the phone, should have gotten his name.
