Grandt Line going out of business
« on: March 14, 2018, 02:24:10 PM »

Grandt Line just announced they're shutting down this summer.  They'll take new orders through 1 May 2018 and then they're done.

Grandt Line is a go-to for all things narrow gauge from road-specific architectural details to freight cars and whole structure kits.

This is a real shame...and I'll be stocking up before they close their doors.

Yes! That is really sad. They filled a large void in N Scale for decades.

Probably the last 6-7 times I tried to order direct from them over the last 5 years I never got a reply. I didn't even know they were still in business.

I read the news this morning in one of my .io groups.  When I tried to access the website, it was down.
Fortunately Tichy does fill some of the void, but only for doors and windows.

It would be a good purchase FOR Tichy, since they're in much the same business.

Holy *****. That's major.

A major blow to the hobby.

It's amazing how vulnerable it is to stuff like this. Think about what would happen if Caboose Industries (a one man operation, who I've met, and is a really nice guy) went out of business.

A major blow to the hobby.

Agreed. Hopefully someone will pick up the product line.

Not to be contrarian .. but I suspect the 3d printing world will fill the void ..

For what?  Windows, doors or entire structures?  Some of the structures I've seen on Shapeways in HO Scale are pretty expensive.

IMO, today's affordable 3D printing  technology does not have high enough surface quality to rival fine metal or resin casings, or injection-molded styrene. Especially when it comes to very small detail parts.

Don’t know how often you’ve worked with Grandt Line stuff but they have some of the crispest, finest injection molding in the industry.  Moreover their HOn3 car kits include brass wire parts and delrin trucks with metal wheelsets and decals. That’s not going to happen on Shapeways any time soon.  Trust someone who has used Grandt Line cars, structure kits, and detail parts on and off for over 25 years that this is a loss that 3-D printing won’t fill.
