From the description: N Scale Union Pacific - Rd# 499030
This 50’ standard boxcar with 8’ plug door, no roofwalk and short ladders is aluminum with orange sides and runs on Bettendorf trucks. These all-steel insulated boxcars were built at the Omaha shops and added to the roster in July 1955. They were equipped with DF loaders and assigned to series 499000-499099. Overhauled and repainted in 1968, this car continued to serve until the late 1980s.

PFE was jointly owned by UP and SP, and it's an insulated boxcar, so why not?

The UP used these to discipline the worse employee of the month as a last ditch effort to shake some sense into them .The car interior was pre oiled with lard ,  in went the bad apple wearing boxing gloves , and too and fro the car was jerked for 20 minutes by a switcher in front of lotto ticket winners to the event .

I am guessing this was a test or experimental paint job.  I thought most of the 4990xx series insulated box cars were repainted yellow with the Automated Railway "map logo" in the 1960s.

Even if the paint scheme is prototypical, the proportions of the UP shield appears to off a bit.  Maybe the new graphic designer Micro-Trains hires will be able to improve on the rendering of the UP shield for future releases.   :(

I figured it had to be an experimental UP version, like the "soup can" logos of the '60s. I think mgt saw that such changes seemed to cheapen UP's image by being trendy or too casual. Yellow, silver, red stripe won out.

If you Google it an HO MDC boxcar painted the same pops up.

"UP Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment", Stagner and Yanosey, from Morning Sun Books, has a picture of 499030 on page 35,  And, yes, it definitely isn't normal Armour Yellow.

Funny... I normally freely spend my allowance on UP cars from 1970, +/-10 years, especially anything with the pre-1970 medallion. Not this one. It's a one-off test scheme and just too weird. Maybe I should get it anyway and weather the heck out of it. :D
