Having issue uploading non HDR photos directly either in my gallery, on a post as an attachment or with the “add picture to post and gallery” option. Getting error: “not valid file” with gallery, and a “timeout or file size” as an attachment... nothing has changed on my phone since my last photos I have posted in my Layout thread. :?

Edit: the image in question was 2.2mb, I mailed it to myself to resize it down to 680kb. Posted with no issue now, sorry for posting oversized images! I suppose cropping the other photos may have got it under a threshold? Anyway, carry on.

I had the same issue yesterday on another forum (rcgroups.com).  Are you using a Samsung phone?  I took a picture with my phone, want to upload it in a smaller size so I e-mailed it to myself but chose the option where it reduces the size (e-mail program is Blue Mail).  Got home to my desktop, open up e-mail and download the resized picture and tried to upload to my post and got the "error: not valid file size" message.  WTF?  So I tried opening the resized file on my desktop with PhotoShop Elements and it says there's an invalid tag in the file.  WTFx2?  If PhotoShop shows an error, I trust that there's something wrong with the file.  But(!) I can open the JPG with Windows by double clicking the resized JPG!

Suspecting that the resizing did something I repeated the same operation but without resizing.  Luckily, even without resizing the file size was just under the 3MB limit for that website.  Guess what?  It uploaded just fine.  So it seems like the resizing on my phone did something to the file.  I didn't investigate further.

The problem I'm having is the site telling me my jpg photo is an invalid photo type. I can post some pictures from the recent show but not others, all photos are unaltered and from my galaxy s7. I also tried loading them to a pc and then uploading from the pc with the same result.  The file size is under 3 megs some I'm at a loss to why it's happening. Any ideas?

Tried to add a post yesterday and one today with one image in the first and two images in the second, both failed.

I had the same problem until I loaded the photos in Photoshop and resized them to 1024 wide. They uploaded fine after that. Kind of frustrating, since it requires access to my desktop and several extra steps/minutes.

So looking into my side of things a bit further and I've noticed something. When I try to upload a single picture that gives me the improper file type error,  the file size is larger than 2mb but not greater than 3. When I try to bulk load these same photos I get the finished check mark but they don't appear in the gallery. So far anything under 2 uploads fine

Bulk upload doesn't seem to give you any indication (clear error report) of a problem. It seems to successfully download the images, but they don't really get posted in the gallery.  Few weeks ago I went over my daily upload limit and the bulk upload was silently dumping the additional uploads. Only when I tried single-image upload, it gave me a meaningful  error (like "daily limit exceeded").

I'm sure the problem is on my end, but I do not know how to fix this.  Any help would be much appreciated.  I finally broke down and got a new iPhone to replace my five-year-old Samsung Galaxy S3.  When I try to upload a photo from the iPhone, though, I get an error with the following reason, "Not a valid picture file."  Huh?

That is the problem I'm having. From what I've experienced and looked I think it has to do with file size. I know  :tommann: has set it up for for us to upload pictures up to 4.77 mb in size but I've had problems with anything over 2mb in size

Roger Holmes sent me some photos that he couldn't upload to see what I can do. He took them with his smart phone and they were under 4Mb in file size (they were 2 or 3 Mb each). But they were all 12 Megapixel (4032 X 3024 pixels).  When I tried to upload them I got an error about the file not being a picture. Then I resized them using my local graphic editor down to 1024 x 768 (or 25%) and those uploaded to TRW perfectly fine.  I'm now wondering if it is not just the file size but the actual pixel dimensions which make TRW uploader puke?

I have several pictures that are 2880x2160 that upload fine and several at the same res that don't. The difference, the 2mb mark. Those larger don't upload while those under do. Now I only say 2mb because that is whole number, it's theoretical point as I'm not sure the exact point this happens

I send this to Phil earlier this week:

That’s actually the problem - the iPhone doesn’t shoot in JPEG anymore it uses the new HEIF format.  This is a new thing so the gallery software that resizes images doesn’t work with HEIF yet.  You can upload them using the attachment function because that will just put the image in your post -  but not every browser can display HEIF yet.

Leave it to Apple and their world domination culture.  :D  Couldn't you set an option to use JPEG as default and not HEIF?  I use Android.

TEST:

Success!  I researched this issue online and discovered how to change the settings, so the iPhone takes pictures in JPEG format.
