I’m starting to think the timeout problems are a result of the server resizing photos on upload.

Hmm . . . but the problem was showing up when I was posting messages (not uploading photos). The photo upload I did went smoothly (except for me reachign the limit). The timeouts were unrelated.

Another burst of server problems happening now:

Connection Problems
Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later.

There was also a period of: 504 Gateway Time-out

I'm  not bitching about it - just trying to possibly help in troubleshooting by shown when the problem is  occurring.  :|

I was going to switch providers this weekend but i’m held up with DNS hosting. I am leaning towards ZoneEdit but can anyone recommend something? Right now site and DNS hosting are by the same company (HostGator) but I would like to distribute this apart.

I use Dynadot as my registrar and DNS host, and I serve my sites from my own server. I think in 10+ years I've experienced maybe one Dynadot outage.

I don’t see where they have DNS hosting. Anyone use Route53?

DNS hosting is an optional function of Dynadot's registrar management. Apparently they don't break it out separately.

More of the same today - mostly connection problems, and few bad gateway errors). going on now.  It is pretty bad.

Tom's working on a new host, so stand by. He's not alone - evidently HostGator is having issues with lots o' folks, SMF database problems particularly:

Ok, I was just trying to point to the problem while  it is happening (to help in possible troubleshooting). But I guess I'll stop now.

Thanks for all the alerts, guys.

I have a new host that I'm currently migrating to.  I'll start another thread when I can figure out a schedule to minimize downtime (I can make it pretty seamless).

Yeah, like Tom said we're past troubleshooting at this point, because the trouble is refusing to be shot.

Seriously... the issue is no longer proving or tracing the problem, it's getting the service provider to step up and do their job. Since that's not happening for Tom and a boatload of other folks the end game is moving elsewhere. One comment I read speculates HostGator's collapse of support over the past couple of months might be indicative of bigger issues. Given the way some of these mid-level tech companies - Photobucket, for instance - handle revenue shortfalls by taking it out on the customers, I would not be surprised if HostGator overextended themselves by aggressively buying-up competitors. It's a common mistake even non-tech companies make.
