What is that axle for? I wouldn't think it was for a hirail vehicle but I could be wrong...

Anyway only thing I have done in N as of late besides sell off a bunch of locomotives.... Is add a rear headlight to a MTL SW1500...

I need to figure out how to cancel out the glow, but MTL windows are damn near impossible to remove...

nscaler, you might try painting the sides of led several times with black paint, to kill the cab glow. How about some pix of how you did it?

Heat-shrink tubing works, too. That's what some of the manufacturers use to solve this problem.

Some people on here have stated to paint the place where the light leak is with silver and then black. I did that with some British handlamps I had cast with an LED inside and it worked as advertised.

I finished-up the Elkmont logging camp on my mini logging layout today. Spar tree loader is rigged (just doesn't show very well in photos!), trees added, details & debris added... just waiting on people to arrive next week to finish it off. I started a build thread, too, if anyone is interested in following along. https://www.therailwire.net/forum/index.php?topic=43696.0

Been clearing the backlog of projects. Almost done with this.

No, I said "Ed's Law."

Picked up this old Key Imports AT&SF Mikado on ebay this week.  Installed a decoder and weathered it a bit.  Runs very well; I only wish the motor had a bit more torque.  It bogs down starting about 15 cars.

Nice!
I meant to ask you since I first saw a photo of this model: where did you get the windows screens?  Or is this a brass model that came with those very fine etched screens?

Omg, I own two of these! I was so excited to acquire my first brass loco, this one,  back in about 1985, and now it looks so...so...plain? I need to dig them up from storage and see if they can be updated...starting with that valve gear guide "thing". Could use a lot more detail too,  but I as recall from like 20 years ago, they ran pretty well (for the era?).
The real 3160 class engine below...

Ok I took a few more photos,
So first I took a square and triangular Jewelers file to cut a groove for the wire to set in, and filed a ~45° angle about where the LED would sit. Right now the LED is just taped in place on the weight.

I want to say it's a 0402 warm white led so heat shrink and painting it won't work...
As far as wiring goes I have the wires soldered to the front headlight LED, but reversed and protected with a resistor, not sure which one as I bought it premade... (Sorry guys I can't solder smd stuff)
As for the Cab like I said earlier the windows are a PiTA  getting out and well right now I have a piece of aluminum foil to block light on the roof.

That CR caboose is the ESM Keyser Valler caboose kit. Screens come with it. I have to get back to finishing mine. Looks like broken glass was modeled in the cupola. Nice touch. Wonder How I'll do with those small parts now.  The proto's were built on steam loco tender frames, IIRC.

Swap the Baldwin domes for USRA, the ATSF cab for a USRA and the six axles for four and it looks like you have a USRA light 2-8-2.  In fact, the MP or RR USRA
light 2-8-2 looks like it would be a good starting point to bash a 3160 class.

Class 3160, Baldwin-Built, 1917-1920:  this means that likely the things were on the drawing boards before the U.S. of A. was involved in the First World War.  Still, to look at it, I have to wonder if this was not the inspiration for the USRA design.

Actually,  you are correct,  there were a free usra locomotives that were based on santa fe design.
Ill have to dig into my book but the iron horses of the santa fe mentions it but I'm not sure how many locomotives.
As for the brass model,  painting the drivers black is a huge help with making it look better. I have two of these as well and they're great runners.
