Can anyone provide some information or links to better photos of the USAF #15, on the UP flat that is on the track behind the locos, on the right side of this photo?

Can you give us a little more to go on, Sirenworks?

I spent 26 years in the USAF, and I'm sure it had many items of many descriptions that were marked Number 15.  I can't make out what that shape is on the flatcar.

That looks like a hitch stand, so maybe a container chassis hauling something ?

It looks like maybe some kind of container or trailer, with the hinges allowing the entire end to open.  I've never seen a container like that with the rounded top.  Wish the pic covered more of the object in question and had a little more light on the lower parts.

As Adam mentioned, that's a hitch and the UP flat #15 is riding on looks like an early ACF or PS intermodal car. Bill, your observation of the hinges and presumption that the end of the 'trailer' opens completely up is one that I had too; so I kinda think it's a missile carrier, or even a mobile launcher, of some sort. Any knowledgeable zoomies know or anyone else care to wager a guess?

Something interesting is when looking for that UP flat number, there's this car a few numbers off that's also in USAF service.



I would have to guess that this series of cars was for this specific purpose and if so, I'd have to think there's some info somewhere.

I wonder if it's just for transporting the missile, or if it can be launched from the trailer?

That trailer is just to transport, raises the missile to a vertical position so it can get lowered into the silo.
