It's been talked about as a rumor for a while, but the new CEO of General Electric has made it official

http://www.railwaygazette.com/news/business/single-view/view/ge-looks-to-sell-rail-business.html

"General Electric expects to dispose of its Transportation business unit over the next two years, along with its Industrial Solutions and Lighting activities, new CEO John Flannery confirmed on November 13. "

They are cutting their dividends by half to save money.  Stocks down 8% because of this.

They are desperate to raise stock prices.  The 20% across the board layoff of both contractors (me) and employees in March and April was the last gasp of the previous CEO.  When that didn't work he resigned early and this new one took over.  Now they are dumping any "non-core" business trying to get stockholders and investors to push up the price on stock.   Transportation made them boatloads (and trainloads) of money in the past years but now they can't see past current downturn.

If they had more realistic profit forecasts they wouldn't be in this bind.  But the corporate fetish with ever increasing profits every quarter, there's no way the can get there from here.  And selling core businesses to keep the investment arm (which is where they think their profits are) won't solve the problem in the long run. Another fine American company sunk by shortsighted thinking.
