So what's the earliest year these were in service?

The Rib-style(Squared) corrugation construction seems to date from the 1980's, at least, gleaned from web photos and sources. The search lead to some other discoveries and it was hard to stay on task, LOL :) . Here is a link to a photo from 1984 of a Rib-style corrugated open top container:  http://PaulBartlett.zenfolio.com/brfreightlinercontainer/e35382031

Research continues :)

Hey if these date back to the 60s, could you include on the website era data? I have a small collection of intermodal books but I still have problems finding much data for the era I model (1975 ish). I know the Hapag scheme is way too new for 1975, but I have no idea on that Maersk scheme.

Thanks!

Mark

Mark,
The ISO Type & Size code 4351, on this Maersk container was used between 1984 and 1995. 1995 forward uses 42U1(new code), AND 4351(the existing code) for this type open top. When I return from a trip, I will check the Maersk book to see if I can pin down the year this scheme was first used.

Sirenworks - I'm checking to see the eariest time frame, I can discover, for this type container.  The Rib-style construction itself, dates from the mid 1960's, however The early photos I have collected for this model appear to be early 80's, but are undated by photographer. I'll check my back files when I get back to them, to see what I can be difinite about.

Steve -

you might want to consider a pair of faded red and orange boxes with logo, reporting painted out for trash / CD  use.....

Thanks for the suggestion Lou, I have not seen them in trash service. Are they used in special trash trains, or mixed in with other container shipments?  I'll research them.

These are pretty rare in every day intermodal service. In fact, I only saw one ever. And that was just two months ago in the Netherlands and it was a 2m euro spec box.

I've seen them usually 1-2 89' flats with containers that have logos painted out....   might be more construction debris than garbage.

Hi Steven,

Can you tell us the spacing of the three magnets on the bottom of the containers?  My personal standard is to have three magnets on the bottom with one magnet centered, and the other two magnets centered 10 scale feet each direction from the center magnet for 40-ft and longer containers.  My 20-ft containers have a steel plate with a small (1/8 inch diameter) rare earth magnet centered inside the top of the container which of course lines up with the bottom magnets that are either side of the center magnet when a 40-foot or longer container is stacked on a pair of 20-foot containers.  All magnets must have the north pole up for my system to work.

I will definitely be getting a few of the JCT containers, but was curious to know if I would need to relocate the magnets.  Thanks for any information you can provide.

Hi Carter,
Please see photo posted on website; https://jtcmodeltrains.com/blogs/news/jtc-models-magnectic-system
- under News / Blog.  I have tried to post the photo here and was unsuccessful. Spacing is designed to have outer magnets be center of our forthcoming 20' containers. We've chosen to use magnets on bottom and metal plates on tops of all containers, applicable, as the most easily compatible system. No Pole direction issue.

edited to add photo.
Thanks, Steven

Steven,

I should have added that until I purchased some Rolland containers, I did not worry about having the north pole always facing up.  However, the Rolland containers have magnets on the top and the bottom, with the north pole facing up.  At first I removed the top magnets from the Rolland containers and replaced them with steel plates.  Then I realized that it would be easier just to make sure the north pole was always up on all of my containers.
