The Kato Milwaukee Road, Olympian Hi set

The Kato Milwaukee Road,  Olympian Hi set, just arrived today..

Looks pretty good!!
Not in my era, but I finally broke-down and ordered the set... (From BLW)
I did not go for the two FP9s, but just picked up the single unit, offered.





The engine in the upper left corner, is the single unit.  In the car set this is an open slot..
Guess, I will be running something else at Trainfest, this year... (Trainfest is this weekend)..

I see that for this train set they molded an empty nest for the engine.  They have done that for the sets packaged in book-style cases, but this is the first for the larger Styrofoam-packaged sets.  Cool!

It does make a difference when almost every set done has been 10+ cars other than the Super Chief set which only had 8. I know quite a few people that remove the unitrack and notch that area out for their power for their trains.

But since the boxes/nest the use for those larger train sets are custom  made for each set (and quite large dimensionally) they could have included nest(s) for the motive power too.  Also, (as you noted above) including the  track in the set is IMO wasted space. I would rather see nests for the motive power.

I've always wondered that, why include the track, and one bumper, and the sets that had companion cars (and power consist) would require the purchase of more track. How many people actually only display trains like these I've wondered. I two have wished they would remove the track and make it where the power or companion cars could all be housed as one.

My thoughts exactly. How many people will have long enough display space to showcase a multi-car passenger set (with a single track bumper). Makes no sense.

But seriously, this is likely a way for Kato to get UniTrack samples into the hands of serious buyers.  If one out of four ultimately decide, "hey, this stuff is really nice," then Kato has made a wise investment.

One thing about using the track holding for other cars or locos is you need to bring up the bottom to match the depth of the bottom for the car holders so the new cars are up against the clear plastic liner. Foamboard is good, or strips of foam rubber of appropriate length. Put it in after you've cut away enough of the styrofoam to insert the original nesting from the loco in the space. The foam liners for KATO locos would look good in there.

The first thing I wondered upon opening the set box (after getting over the WOW factor), was what the heck that empty pocket was for.  I would be nervous using it to transport a loco, as it provides no protection for the couplers or the horn from being mashed during transportation.  Personally, I would just use the factory jewel cases/inserts to ensure protection for those beauties.

I can’t even imagine how many of these Olympian sets will be rolling the rails at Trainfest. I wouldn’t be surprised to see one (or more) on every N Scale layout there.

Have any of you tried to install the lighting kits in these cars yet?  I've got a friend who has been struggling with them,
finding that the clear plastic light spreader doesn't seem to fit and will allow the car to be snapped back together.
If anyone puts them in, can you post in here about any tricks or problems you encounter?  (Or if you have no problems at all).
