Edit: no matter which way I edit this photo on my phone, it still comes out upside down. Odd.

To get technical, the photo was taken upside down relating to where the phone's camera has its physical "top" and "bottom". I suspect that when you edit a photo taken on your phone and you rotate it using the app on your phone, all that does is change the file's metadata which the phone's photo viewer utilizes to orient the photo on the screen.  But the the actual bit structure of the captured image in the file does not change.  When viewed on other devices (like a PC), the metadata is ignored and the photo is displayed using the bit structure of the bits in the file.  If you were to edit that photo in some graphic app on your PC, it would actually rewrite the bit structure within the file.

I don't own a smart phone, but this is a common problem and that is how I think we can explain this problem.

Nope... the pic was taken in landscape mode => side ways.  Originally, my phone senses this and saves it correctly.  But when uploaded, for some reason, TRW choose to display this landscape photo also ... just upside down.  I then rotated it both right and left on my phone (as you state, changing just the metadata) ... but didn't impact the TRW display.     

BTW, that plate on the SD&A turn out was in front of the engine house lead tracks circa 1919.  I suspect it was temporary derail device protecting the engine house - but certainly odd.

LOL, It is not just portrait mode. Even in landscape there is top/bottom orientation stored in the metadata.  I bet you that if I take your photo and rotate it on an app in my PC it will show up correctly here on TRW. It is a smart-phone thing (if you Google for it you'll find lots of info).

I rotated Jake's photo 180 deg. using Corel PhotoPaint on my Windows 7 PC.

I don't think it's a derail, I think it's meant to lift the wheel/flange over the rail.

When you upload the photo to the gallery, you can rotate it there.  Once photo is uploaded, go into your gallery, click on edit under the photo in question.  There is a box that comes up on next page Rotate Image By Degrees .  Enter required degrees to orient the picture correctly and click Edit Picture.  Ta da !  Picture is upright

You're right - I forgot about that feature (since all my photos have correct orientation).    But that functionality can be handy for smart phone users.

I already have too many distractions (and too many computing devices around me). I have a flip-phone for emergencies.   I don't want or need a smart phone.  I can live without the need to be always reachable, or needing to be in constant contact with the entire world.
