Don't see to many of you guys passing comments on this release from Sony. Not into offerings from Sony here? Is it Bob and his works of art has bullied us all into Nikon??

Neah, he can't bully us into Nikons!
I still have a Casio QV-100 (my first digital camera). It was 0.3 megapixel camera (640x480 images) and had non-expandable 4Mb of flash memory built-in. It used serial (COM) port for downloading photos.   

But to be honest, companies like Nikon or Cannon have been concentrating on and making cameras for very, very long time. Sony? It is just a consumer electronic company. PlayStation anyone?  Why go with that brand when you can own a "real" camera. 

Before someone down-votes me - this is a humorous post. No malicious intent was meant.

Sony, correct me if I amwrong acquired minolta to give them the base they needed and developed their range from there. I often find people are not prepared to look at the advancements in certain fields and stick with the tried and tested missing out by doing so.

In an other post some time ago I alerted the congregation to advances in the olympus and sigma products and got howled down by those who knew better, the only problem being they did not know about what was coming. Some of the other offerings I never see discussed to any extent are Fujifilm, Mamiya, and Leica and with good reason Hasselblad .... cheaper to by a car.

Nikon and Canon are the 800 lb. gorillas.  They are traditional camera companies whereas Sony suddenly became one overnight by buying Konica-Minolta.  Some people resent the "Look!  I'm a camera company now!" by buying a camera company.  Like Peteski said, Sony is best known for being a consumer electronics company.

Don't get me wrong, they are definitely a power house.  Some of the earlier Nikon DSLRs were using Sony sensors.  But it's name branding.  I'm sure the giant Panasonic conglomerate can build a car but if they did, how many people would associate Panasonic being a car company?

The Sony A7RII looks like a great camera, but the E-mount lenses are big and currently expensive.  I would consider one if they had a smaller 35mm F2 lens to give me more flexibility than my Rx1.

Not sure what this has to do with anything. Red started selling cameras in 2007. They are now a major force in digital photography. Their origin? Oakley sunglasses...

Indeed. I owned a Suzuki car for some years, and many people remarked to me they didn't know Suzuki made cars. (They actually supplied GM with their Metros.)

I bought a Sony A30(?) when it was released precisely because it was built on the Minolta SLR optics I suit for the preceding 25 years. Sadly Sony redesigned the bayonet mount so I couldn’t reuse my lenses but otherwise it’s been and remains a great camera.

How about sharing your comments on this release then?  What's the impact of the mirrorless system in your opinion?

Rubbish, let me know when Sony makes a Cell Phone with a good camera because that's what all of us kids are using these days.

@David K. Smith has a good point about Red.  This stuff is very high end for professional video use (think $20,000 video cams) and they came out of nowhere.

Sony bought Konica-Minolta back in 2005, which instantly gave them a quality system and a second product line to go along side their P&Ss. My wife bought me a Sony a100 in 2006, and all the photos in my first Weathering Book were taken with it. The sensor stabilization that it had was only found in Sony DLSRs at the time. 

For now, the weather sealed m4/3 equipment that I have works for me.  But I can see going back to Sony eventually.

How about sharing your comments on this release then?  What's the impact of the mirrorless system in your opinion?

John, firstly I am lucky enough to get to access equipment that others often don't, but like most people who drive expensive, performance cars can't drive, a camera in my hands is used for taking pictures. I am not a qualified photographer that fully understands the intricacies of constructing a photo. There are others here, (one whom I have already poked a little fun at) that often indicate their understanding in this field far exceeds my limited skills. Mirrorless systems seem to be streamlining the process of collecting the image, as the electronics get better the thickness of cameras are reducing. I was a doubter when Olympus released their first entry but now I have to admit this type of camera has become something that seriously needs to be considered when purchasing a camera. The camera bodies seem to be more robust and able to handle rough handling and some of the photos from these are quiet spectacular.
Regardless of the camera you use to collect the image it is the lenses that you choose that makes the difference and again let me remind you I'm a hack in this area.  I love photoshop.

Actually my second xperia, bought them primarally for the camera...  Not sure what I will do when I'm due for an upgrade, tempted to go back to an Iphone but thats a little ways away still...
