I'm a steam guy through and through, but after being in NYC Hickory Creek this summer, the 1948 version would rock with e-units would rock! But who says it has to be e-units? How about a Niagra?
Being a WM steam guy, I look at these things in terms of what parts might be available for kitbashing/scratch-building. The Hudson would make some cool things available, but what did the SP use to pull the 1941ish Lark? Was that a GSx - 4-8-4?
I vote for a C&O streamlined Hudson and a set of Chessie passenger cars !!
Greetings,I would have liked to have seen the original Rock island 4 car Rocket with a TA. Having said that Kato is already partway to a SP/RI Golden State. Kato already makes E-8's, 6-6-4 sleepers, 4-4-2 sleepers, and a diner from their CBQ set is a match for Yucca, Sahuaro, and Ocotillo. (I hope I spelled them correctly). Even Bachmann makes observation LaMirada. Who know how many of the old Rivarossi RI Golden State 820's, a couple RI coaches, and Golden Vista/Golden Divan observations were sold as anything but what they actually were. It would be great to have the whole train from Kato rather than cobble together a later Rocket or Golden State from good cars and older cars.Kato is also partway there with a Wabash Blue Bird. E8 and 3 domes. Still needs the baggage/lounge 650, Diner 51 and dome observation 1601, which is a near sister to the 2 domes on the Twin Cities Zephyr. An E7 in this mix would give them the original Blue Bird. I was hoping for a resin 1601 but I don't think that will ever happen.Thank you all for letting me get that bit of frustration out, but I can still hope and dream.Have a pleasant evening,Bobster
I just voted for diesel-era 20th Century and heavyweight Lark. Both are losing badly.
Contrarians sometimes win, but I'd see this as fact gathering, not a popularity vote, as they'll surely expect skewed numbers...... dave
Think what you want but the fact is that the Dreyfus Hudson came on top (or close 2nd) in Kato's summer poll which gave a choice of several steam locos, and now they have another poll which includes that Hudson and its matching train (which so far seems to be very popular with voters). Unlike what happened with the last presidential polls, I think this one seems to show a strong possibility that the Hudson and 20th Century Ltd. might actually be produced. I'm wishing and hopping. I don't specifically model NYC, but I think that is it one handsome looking train! I love to get my hands on one.
I model the NYC in the late 40's, so one would think I'd automatically vote for the 1948 version of the Century with E units and the Creek Observations. However, I believe N scale is long overdue for a modernized model of the Hudson, and my desire to have such a project done far out weighs my desire to have a complete 1948 version of the Century. Besides, once Kato produces a 4-6-4 mechanism, I imagine the un-streamlined version of the engine would be a much stronger possibility of getting produced. At the very least, detailing a Con-Cor shell and putting it on the Kato drive would be a good project. And no matter what, we'll end up with a very good looking passenger train....-Brian.
