1900-1970s Boiler house coal dump facilities

For reasons I don't want to explain yet, I'm looking for what a smallish (but still rail served) boiler house's coal dump facility would look like.

A google search turned up this (http://www.spikesys.com/Bin/EBT/16015.jpg) from http://www.spikesys.com/EBT/Tour/boilhse.html which is about what I was thinking, but I'd love for some more photographs.

I'm looking for something that would fit alongside a building sized like http://www.modeltrainstuff.com/Model-Power-N-1573-National-Casket-Company-p/mdp-1573.htm

I'm thinking something that might still be holding on in the Penn Central era.

Do any of you have good examples?

If the Acme Portable hole isn't for you, you could always use a portable conveyor.

Actually, yes, I AM curious about the hole in the ground. Were they grated? Were they in sheds? What did they look like inside?

They're relatively easy to find still. Colleges, correctional facilities, hospitals, small municipalities and large industries still have them, just with the track torn up. The old looney bin in Eldersburg has one, on Buttercup Road, and it's still there if you look on Google Maps. The spur that ran up the hill and to Oklahoma Avenue ran to the facility to haul coal up. Bowie State has one too, right off of the NEC. Not sure if the pits are still there, but it's worth a poke.


In addition, I found these N&W shop drawings of boiler houses that show some dump detail, may be a good starting point for more poking...

are you talking about the grate like thing ... is that what you want .. if its the building part, scratch that out of those old volmer brick buildings ..
