                  :|I have a sneaky feeling but I may be wrong that there are quality control issues with BLI items if the fairly recent Lionel-Like automated water towers are being returned and refurbished, and the livestock cars it is hard to figure out what may be the problem unless modelers received them and then realized the slats were not see thru done to make it a better sound box and they returned them and Broadway could not resell them as new mint in the box. Refurbishing the various locomotives is a bit more understandable although when the PRR M1a's came out no very long afterward I saw them listed as reconditioned so was there a flaw with them (mine runs great) or just modelers deciding again they didn't want them and they sent them back. That's just incredibly stupid.  Buy 1000 or however many you need 13x18mm "sugar cube" speakers with their own sealed enclosures, and use open slats.  I like my PA-1's, but jeez this company does some very odd things.

Oops - I'm sorry - forgot to put a  at the end of my statement.  I partially said that in jest and partially as a speculation.  I don't have any inside-info about the reason they molded the slats closed.

I have several, and no problems. Bought a refurb steamer but not on the rails yet. Will update in a few days after I run it.

I've bought some E units new when they were blowing them out at $99 each and some refurbished E's and PA/PBs. The refurbished units were same as new.

I have seen reports on line about the last issue of PA units have QC issues with the grills.
