Had to do that once myself at Phila Suburban Station. Train not moving as fast and I was able to "miss" the pillars.

Did that in Trenton once during my college days, getting off a Pennsy passenger train after helping a date with her bags.  Fortunately, I was a lot more graceful and was able to wave goodby while standing on my feet as her window passed me standing on the platform.  But, train was only going about 6 mph for my exit.
