so what can we do with the rest of these cars? Do you see anything else us Santa fe and UP modelers could turn these into?
I probably should not answer until Jerry Laboda steps in with what will be the definitive answer- his knowledge on this stuff is encyclopedic. But, I don't know that these help with modeling ATSF cars, although I imagine there would be some use as a 60' foreign baggage in a Fast Mail.  Maybe rework a door for a "Close enough" NYC. I don't much in the way of resources on UP or SP, so I'll leave those to people with more expertise.

In general, I think with some work on doors and playing around with balloon or Harriman roof, we can probably come close to a lot of prototypes.  Most that I am familiar with are midwestern prototypes.

I am guessing that the obs is a foobie, although maybe it has possibilities as a core for a 400 series business car.  Not sure who besides CNW had coaches that small, most similar cars I have pictures of are 72' the vestibules, or thereabouts.  But looks like it should be easy enough to cut and paste these into longer cars.

I'm planning to use my Bachmann's to mock up cars that I might kitbash out of the Atlas cars.

PS- to anyone at the show- would Atlas be willing to publish the dimensions on those cars?  And let them know the diaphragms look good- RTR diaphragms that work (which is what I think I am seeing there) will be a first on a heavyweight, I think.

I assume that these are the same cars that Atlas has in O scale now. If so, they are all CNW prototypes other than the observation which is a foobie (I think it was done to "complete" a train of these cars). They will probably repeat a number of the O road name releases (L&N, CNJ, CNW, NYC, SAL, MILW, ATSF...) and probably more for N.

Did the Milwaukee Road have similar combines for mixed train service? The number of windows is different, but the length looks right.

Just as interesting to me is that the combine is behind the engine and there is a rib side caboose behind the 2 hoppers. I have seen one other pic of a mixed train on this line and it had the same configuration but with one of their home built branchline combines behind the loco and a regular caboose on the end of the train.

Is the RPO mirrored on the other side?

Since we are talking about Atlas and not Concor the answer defaults to "YES!!!  Remember... these have first been released some time back in O scale.  Just hate that they shortened the CNJ observation car... just doesn't look right.

The mail cars have application on a number of roads: Atlantic Coast Line 9 - 12 (9, 10 low arched roof, 11, 12 high arched roof), Baltimore & Ohio 40 - 48, Delaware Lackawanna & Western 1814 and 1817, Gulf Mobile & Ohio 43 - 46 (modernized in the late 40s with altered windows; ex-Alton, nee-Chicago & Alton), Louisville & Nashville 1106 - 1114, Southern Railway 30 - 49 (rebuilt with deeper letterboard by adding strip of steel below letterboard to match Pullman car letterboards).  The baggage is another story.  Because of the spacing of the doors and the matched size of the doors it does not match any known prototype aside from CNW.  The combine and coach are also pretty much CNW though the line did sell a number of coaches to Nacionales de Mexico when they were retired from suburban service, where they saw further use.

Now to go do some more editing at the N-scale Varnish User's Guide...

The big blow turbine was technically the first locomotive.
As for freight cars, my guess is yet another intermodal.

Bryan,

Since meeting you was one of the highlights of the show for me , please include the interesting tank car and the low side gondola. Two of the more unique new models at the show. Don't forget that I would like a few of each !!
