I picked up an older (not DCC-ready) Atlas GP35 yesterday. It runs fine and I will be getting the frame milled so that I can install a decoder. The two light boards have the older "yellow" LEDs and I'd like to replace them with "white" LEDs. Can someone give me some instructions/advice on how to do this? What LEDs would I need and where's a good source for them? Do the new LED's get soldered to the existing light board, or is there another way to do this?

These are a 3 MM LEDs. You can find them on E-Bay and other places. You just need to look for Sunny White if you what a bright white light or maybe a softer golden white LED. You un-solder the one on the board and replace it with the new one you chose. Make sure you get the polarity correct!
Look at the LED carefully before you unsolder it, install the new LED the same way.

Hi Bart.

This should be pretty easy.  This is a 3mm LED.  Order a white 3mm LED (I like warm white, or sometimes called "sunny white," instead of bright white, but you have a choice) from your favorite model electronics supplier - Streamlined Backshop in Indiana has them, All Electronics, Richmond Controls, etc.  They aren't hard to find.

Now - notice the orientation of the LED on the board.  You'll see two elements inside the LED housing - a small one and a large one.  The small element (on the right side of the LED in your photo) is the anode, or positive connection; the large one is the cathode, or negative connection.  But all you really need to do is note the orientation of those two parts and remember it - take a photo, mark it with a marker or whatever.

Now the "proper" way to replace the LED would be to desolder it by heating the two solder pads holding the leads and cleaning off the solder, loosening the LED leads, which then allows you to pull the LED out from the pad holes.  But this is easier said than done unless you have some sort of desoldering equipment, like a desoldering braid or vacuum bulb.  So what I do is simply cut the current LED off at it's base, then solder the leads of the new LED to the remaining leads of the old LED.  REMEMBER THE ORIENTATION - the new LED should have the same anode/cathode orientation as the old one.  [Another way to do this without desoldering equipment is to cut the old LED, then to desolder the remaining leads one at a time, which is much easier than trying to desolder both at once so you can remove the old LED whole.  Simply heat the solder blob on the pad and use a pair of tweezers or needle-nose pliers to remove the remainder of the old LED lead from the hole when the solder has liquified. You can then clean out the pad hole with a small drill bit).

That's it - you're done.   It sounds harder than it is - shouldn't take you more than five minutes once your soldering iron is hot.

These might be a little too bright bluish white, but it offends me a little how hight the markup is through hobby outlets.   If you can find an item on eBay or Amazon that specifies a color temperature of 2700-3000 that will be a little yellower, more like an incandescent bulb and less like a fluorescent.

TCS CN-GP decoder??..

Kill 2 birds with 1 stone... new LEDs and no frame milling....

Thanks for the ideas.

Attaching new LEDs seems pretty straight-forward and within my skill set.

I am also intrigued by the TCS CN-GP idea...but the TCS site says that it would be the CN decoder that's needed, and that some milling needs to be done to the frame by the front light board. The frame and code on the frame in their photos matches what I have. They mention using a Dremel tool to do the frame modifications. What Dremel bit would you use to do this?

I didn't mention the TCS CN-GP because you didn't mention DCC in you original post and because in my experience with older decoders of this model the LEDs are pretty bluish white.  Maybe they have improved the LED color in subsequent production runs.  I don't know why the CN would be recommended over the CN-GP in this application.
