For my 70th , my wife let me control the rest of the schedule on our 2 day trip to Sight & Sound (Sampson) in Lancaster, PA:
.     Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania (PRR T-Shirt),
.     Strasburg RR,
.     3 Railroad gift shops,
.     Hobby shop (X-Acto blades), and
.     2 free birthday buffet meals (Shady Maple & Millers).
Had a great time! 

Strasburg RR is currently running a 2-10-0 they got from Great Western in Colorado (I miss the old, old days when they ran a Pennsy 4-4-2):



Across the street is the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania with a great selection of engines and equipment (much of it rusting away in the yard):





I didn’t realize the Reading had round ended observation cars:


They also have a host of model railroads from HO to garden sized (and a Lego railroad). Enjoyed talking with Bill, one of the model railroad guardian volunteers.

Love that picture Ed! With all the talk about industrial decline, its nice to see there's still some steel in Steel City.

While we're on the subject of favorite pictures that we took, here's a shot I took almost nine years ago.  The angle was interesting, but the foliage was lacking since I took this photo in winter (January 2008).  But, it's still one of my favorite pictures that I ever took.  At that time, the highway overpass was closed to vehicular traffic and allowed safe railfanning with a great angle.



I went back the following October and nabbed this picture.  The foliage is better, but the trash train is, well, meh.

Yes, but not for long. Appears to be fresh out of the paint shop, where they removed the light packages, added ditch lights and applied "speed lettering", which was not delivered on this unit. The mismatched number boards are also a "tell".

Photo is of the east portal at Walong; the steps on the left go up to the top part of the loop and the access/parking. John did a good bit of trespassing for this shot. This location was considered risky even in the pre-UP (pre-"Rusty") days because Kern County would respond to RR complaints of people in places they shouldn't be. Being down in "the pit" meant you had a fair hike on RR property in or out.

thanks. I think that I took that picture of that Cotton Belt loco in 1992 as a teenager.

SP8362 is eastbound, about to enter the horseshoe. The Santa Fe train is westbound and coming off the hill.
