[Not specifically N scale, but here you go.]

This year, the Railway Modeller’s Meet of British Columbia (RMMBC) is running concurrently and adjacent to the Vancouver Train Expo (VTE) from November 3rd to November 6th, 2016.  The RMMBC will offer attendees a fantastic lineup of prototype and modelling clinics running the gamut from state-of-the-art electronics to scenery, and from locomotive weathering to layout design and construction.  The meet will also feature slide shows, model displays and competitions, and self-guided layout tours.  Many Railwire members will be presenting including Tim Horton, Greg Kennelly, Mark dance and yours truly.  For those of you who are interested in BC modeling you won’t wish to miss Anthony Craig’s clinic on modeling the scenery of BC or Steve Stark’s presentation on his legendary E&N, N scale layout.  And we are told that Pete Steimetz will be presenting solutions to dead rail operations in Hon3 steamers…so can N be far behind? ;)

Registrants may sign up for operating sessions at one of seven well known Vancouver layouts (but spaces are limited so first come first serve!) Finally, for an additional fee you can attend the Saturday evening banquet to chat with friends about your favorite hobby and be entertained by a fascinating presentation on the relocation of a Great Model Railway, Dr. Brian Pate’s Klondike Mines Railway, 3000 km north to the Yukon!

The RMMBC meet will take place in the convention facilities of the Atrium Inn (2889 Hastings Street), next door to the PNE and the VTE.  Your RMMBC registration gives you entry to both days of the VTE 2016 across the street.   It looks like the 2016 Railway Modeller’s Meet will be a fantastic experience for all registrants, with an expanded range of programs to suit almost everyone provided in a comfortable environment.  It is an excellent opportunity to meet and talk with fellow model railroaders, learn new skills and take away ideas to help advance your modelling.  For registration details please register online here, or contact the registrar at bcclogg@shaw.ca.  Capacity is limited so register early and tell your friends! We look forward to seeing you!

If your presentation was also virtual, I could stay at home :)

Only four weeks to go until the Meet! New Clinics and Events Added!

We are just over a month away (November 3-6, 2016) from the Railway Modellers Meet of BC at the Atrium Inn, across from the Vancouver Train Expo at the PNE.  There are a number of exciting new additions to the clinic roster and other events at the Meet.   Registrations are flowing in and, with their limited space, the Operating Sessions are nearing capacity.  If you have wondered about the Operations side of our hobby and would like to try it out in a supportive setting on one of the many top class layouts hosting sessions, register soon to avoid disappointment! Please see http://railwaymodellersmeetofbc.ca/node/30 which has all the details on the operating sessions.

The Clinics have had several great additions to the roster.  For fans of BC mainline modelling, and for the rest who just appreciate great model engineering, Scott Lamoureux has created a beautiful model of the Cisco Bridge in N Scale using etched brass, styrene and some not so common materials (leveling cement?!?).  BTW: Scott's addition brings to 5 the TRW members speaking at the meet this year!  He will show how he went from concept to completion of this amazing bridge and scene.  Another great addition to the clinic roster is Allen Ferguson's clinic on using printed paper to make awesome structures for your layout. http://railwaymodellersmeetofbc.ca/clinics  has more details on the amazing variety of clinics being offered as part of the RMMBC.

Registration for the banquet has already surpassed attendees seen in previous years, and we still have four weeks to go for registration!  If you want to attend this friendly social gathering to chat about your favorite hobby and hear the tale of Brian Pate’s Klondike mines Railway, register soon so you get a seat!

And a final note about the self-guided layout tours.  The layout tours have always been a popular part of previous meets, and the RMMBC continues the tradition.  This year the tour will take in layouts in the North Vancouver area.  We have several layouts confirmed and anticipate a number of others will be added for the Sunday event.  Please visit  http://railwaymodellersmeetofbc.ca/node/3 to view photos of some of the layouts that will be a part of the self-guided tour.

Come out to the meet and enjoy the camaraderie of fellow modellers as we share the fun of this great hobby. http://railwaymodellersmeetofbc.ca/node/10 has all the registration information. We hope to see you at the Meet!

Gary, please let me know next time one of these happens. Unfortunately, my wife recently misplaced her passport so she can't cross the border to come; and she will kill me if I leave her in the corporate housing in Portland to go on a cross-border excursion by myself so soon after arriving in our new port of call.  I so want to go though...

It's just two weeks until the Vancouver Meet!

There are only two short weeks until the Railway Modellers Meet of BC is upon us!  If you have registered, read on to see what is in store for you at the meet.  If you haven't registered, read on to see why you should!  Plan to attend the meet November 3rd to 6th at the Atrium Inn (2889 East Hastings Street), across the street from the PNE.

Clinics Covering a Wide Range of Topics

Attend a clinic on building big bridges from brass and plastic as well as scenery to complete scenes like this.  Yes, this is an N scale model of the CN Cisco bridge!

Learn tools, tips and tricks to recreate dramatic BC scenery like this!

Learn how to use tools like paper cutting machines to make perfect shingles like these!

See a virtual demonstration of dispatcher-controlled CTC operations supported by detection & signalling hardware using JMRI

Learn about the latest advances in radio and battery controlled locomotives in HOn3 and O Scale and everything in between.

There are a host of other clinics in the schedule, too many to list here.  Please visit  http://railwaymodellersmeetofbc.ca/clinics for the full schedule and summaries of the great clinics that will be part of the meet this year.

2016 Self Guided Layout Tours - North Vancouver
The self guided layout tour is back for 2016.  This year the tour will feature layouts from North Vancouver.  Five layouts are open on Sunday for the tour this year, covering a wide range of railways and scales.  Don't miss this opportunity to see some fabulous model railways.

Operating Sessions

A perennial favourite, the operating sessions are back for 2016.  A total of seven layouts are open for operating sessions on Thursday, November 3rd and Friday, November 4th.  A very limited number of spaces are still available so register now to avoid missing out on this popular meet activity!

Other Meet Activities

In addition to all the activities listed above there are many others to keep meet registrants busy.

Thursday night features a slide night for those not attending the operating sessions that evening. Bring 20 of your best slides to show to the other attendees.  As well the slide show will feature images from the PNR 7th Division Hewlett collection, many of which have never been seen before.  http://railwaymodellersmeetofbc.ca/node/51 has all the details.

Friday and Saturday have the the heart of the Railway Modellers Meet: YOUR MODELS!  Bring your models, finished or in progress, for display and discussion.  All scales, gauges, and models from all eras are welcome; bring locomotives, structures, freight cars, dioramas, vehicles or other models. http://railwaymodellersmeetofbc.ca/display has more information on this important part of the meet.

Saturday evening will feature the banquet (tickets required), a great opportunity to meet and socialize with your fellow modellers with a wonderful catered meal provided.  The featured speaker for this years banquet is Mark Dance, who will talking about the trials and tribulations of moving Brian Pate's Klondike Mines Railway to Dawson City for public display there.  It promises to be a fun and entertaining evening for everyone attending.  Please see http://railwaymodellersmeetofbc.ca/banquet for more details.

The RMMBC meet is happening concurrently with the Vancouver Train Expo (http://www.vancouvertrainexpo.ca/) across the street at the PNE.  Your RMMBC registration gives you full access to the VTE both Saturday and Sunday so you can get the best both events have to offer.

Registering for the Meet

To register or for further details, visit http://railwaymodellersmeetofbc.ca/node/10 or contact the registrar at bcclogg@telus.net for more information.  We hope to see you at the Railway Modellers Meet of BC, November 3-6 at the Atrium Inn across from the PNE and the Vancouver Train Expo.

Tell your friends!

This was a fantastic meet:  great clinics, lots of great models on display, and a really friendly group of people.  There were people there from all over BC, Alberta and folk from the Seattle region (and this Ontarian  :D).  The highlight for me was operating on Mark Dance's magnificent Columbia and Western layout.  We managed to get a train or two out of the yard and I was able to run a helper up the grade a twice (sorry about the tunnel derailment...).   I had a great time and lots of inspiration for figuring out how to proceed with my layout.  Thanks Mark for hosting the operating session and @GaryHinshaw for a visit to Tehachapi BC to see the progress.

There is a great cohort of modelers in Vancouver and a disproportionate number of them are working with n scale.  If you are in the vicinity, this is a meet worth making an effort to attend the next one in May 2017.

Glad you had a good time Scott...your clinic on the Cisco bridge was great and very well received.  Thanks for putting it on!

And thanks to the other TRW members - Tim, Greg and Gary - for their awesome clinics.

Now I just have to convince Max to come up and present clinics on his amazing scratchbuilt steamers for the 2017 RMMBC meet in May!  How about it Max??? :)  (I know I said I would wait until January but I couldn't miss the opportunity)

You're welcome, Mark.

I was very pleasantly surprized by the level of interest there was in the Pacific Great Eastern's marine operations.  By my count, there were about 30 people in the clinic room.

At the concurrent Vancouver Train Expo, we had our regular attendees from the PGE-BCR Modellers - fellow TRW members Tim, Chris, Doug and, of course, Jim all the way from Santa Fe, NM.  Also David and Mike - not sure if they are TRW members or not.

Cheers,
