I have no hints but just a comment about the photos. When I fist looked at it (before reading the text) I thought it was a photo on a train layout!  The lighting of the un-weathered building, the color and evenness of the backdrop and the artificial-looking even-colored grass all look like someone's train layout. But the cars did look like nicely weathered models.  :)

MDC -- might have to splice some .. also MT 50's might be good for these

For the waffle side car, my first guess would be splicing a couple of Exactrail cars or possibly MDC cars.

1st car- a pair of MDC cars would be the way to go, they have a 12' plug door rather than the 10' plug door on the MTL car, and more importantly, they haven't been vertically compressed to overcompensate for the jacked-up bolsters on the MTL car.   The picture is too small on my phone to see if the prototype has the same X-panel roof on the MDC car.

MDC FMC plug door car is Plate C car with a 12' door opening and would be a much better starting point than the MTL car that has been squished down to overcompensate for the jacked-up bolster height and only has a 10' plug door
MTL plug door car is closer to a Plate B car (when it's not jacked up) with a 10' door opening.

2nd car - The "droop" sill tells me that this is an ACF-built car, and the car appears to have a flat roof (likely diagonal panel) rather than a peaked roof,  but the resolution is a tad small on my phone to say for sure.

For the starting point, it may be a toss-up between the Atlas Trainman ACF 5300 or MDC plug door car to see which pair of spliced cars would require less work to match the sides of this car (before adding styrene "waffles")

Atlas 60' ACF auto parts cars have a flat diagonal panel roof that may (or may not) be useful for this car.

Both the MDC (L&N) and Exactrail (Southern) models are based on later PS-built cars that wouldn't have enough posts/side panels after being spliced into 60' cars.

The car on the left is a Gunderson car part of the KCS 129000-129224 built 1994.

The car on the Right is Pullman Standard built (I would have guessed ACF aswell) KCS 123005-125491 built 1970 and another higher 1255xx number series (early build date explains the frame)
These cars had their ends rebuilt in 1994/95 (by Gunderson??)

I recall the Gunderson built cars had the same roof as the Con-Cor MHC

Nice catch on the PS-built car, those rebuilt ends also looked like they came from an ACF-built car.

Thanks guys. I had been looking at the Athearn, MTL and Atlas cars (as well as the BLMA beer cars). All would need major work since only the BLMA comes in a single door version.

Wouldn't another option be to find the existing model(s) with the correct roof/ends/doors/underframe, and then either etch or rapid prototype the sides?

Sounds easier than finding the patience to add a bunch of individual "waffles" to a kitbashed/scratchbuilt model of the PS-built car with the identity crisis...
