I conducted an experiment with the left over portion of a Trainworx underframe.  When building the Kenworth T800 semi-tractor, I had a enough of the forward portion of the underframe left over to mount another cab kit.  So, with a little work I found I could splice some Evergreen 3/16 inch channel to the left over piece of the Trainworx underframe, and create an underframe for a straight truck.  I needed to update some of my old Con-Cor kitbashes for the N Scale Vehicle Association's display at the Pittsburgh convention in June, but of course, until the new shipment of truck parts arrive, underframes are in short supply.

New "pins" for mounting the fuel tanks to the channel were made with 0.04 inch Evergreen styrene rod.

There is nothing like a photo to bring out the shortcomings in a model, but this will probably be as far as I get with this one before the convention.

Edit:  I forgot to mention that the dump bed is from Wiking, and the mudflaps are from Showcase Miniatures.

If there's anything you're not happy with on that truck, you can happily send it to the Hanover Sub.  Looks better than any other dump truck on the layout.

Thanks, but I need to add some outside bracing for the boards along the top of the bed.  However, in person the lack of bracing is not that noticeable, but it sure is in the photo!

The experiment continues.  I removed the sideboards and molded on brackets, and replaced them with new sideboards in which the "brackets" are glued to the sideboards.

I did not get a flush fit because I was trying to keep the "damage" to a minimum to avoid having to repaint the truck bed.  But, with this one "completed" I have a better idea for proceeding with future kitbashes using the Trainworx trucks and my collection of Wiking truck beds.

Thank you Peter.   Yes, I will be attending the convention in Pittsburgh.  This truck will replace a Con-Cor "Kenworth" that has been part of the N Scale Vehicle Association' s convention display since 2005!

I won't be able to get all of the display models updated or replaced, but I am trying to update as many as I can with the Trainworx trucks/parts.

Peter,

That is great that you will be able to make it to the convention.  The voting for the N Scale Vehicle of the Year Awards will take place during registration Wednesday afternoon, and the N Scale Vehicle Association will have display tables at the Swap-A-Rama Friday morning, and at the public show Friday afternoon and Saturday.  Just stop by the tables anytime!

I sure will!  I'll be also entering some structures and vehicles in the model contest, and also spend time at the NTRAK layout where Roland Kelley and I will have the Royal American Shows Carnival modules in the layout.  Lots of lights and animation - a perfect NTRAK attraction.   :D

Peter,

These conventions are always fun, and it is a bonus when you get to meet people in person that you only know via the web!
