SOLVED! - How Do You Get the Shell Off an Atlas RS3?

I have two Atlas RS3 locos and I tried to remove the shells. Impossible without breaking something! Grrrrr...

EDIT - I tried a different tack and got the shell off one of the RS3s. The other one won't come off for anything...


Hmm... I haven't seen

Two scientists create a teleportation ray, and they try it out on a cricket. They put the cricket on one of the two teleportation pads in the room, and they turn the ray on.

On the "old school" 1980s version?  If I remember correctly ... remove the handrails from the cab and battery boxes; remove the cab from the body; lift the body from the cab end; lift the handrails from the cab end; slide the handrails and body forward; lift the body and handrails up.

On the current version, pretty sure you can lift the entire body off the chassis as it is held on by dimples in the frame at either end.

I apparently have the recent version. The handrails are separate pieces. No matter what I've tried, the shell on one RS3 will only come up about 1/2 inch in the rear. The front end won't budge! I tried putting toothpicks wedged between the shell below the cab and the frame, but putting a toothpick in one side shifts the truck over a bit, which prevents putting a toothpick on the other side of the cab. Stupid, stupid stupid!

Okay, I tried something new... using a screwdriver to lift the back of the shell up even more. That did it, as the shell finally released by the cab and front. I then wiggled the shell off the rest of the way. Whew.

I have an N scale NW2 that I took the shell off of. The loco fell apart immediately... trucks and drivetrain... I had to get it reassembled by a fellow forum member.

anything anymore...

If the HO NW-2 is more than 24 hours old the body has fused itself to the chassis.The only way to get it apart is to buy another NW-2 and put the first one in a box and hide it in the closet.Just be sure to pick it up by the fuel tank or the shell will come off in your hand while the rest of the loco lands on your bare toes.

Yep! That N scale NW2 will have you talking in tongues trying to put the shell back on while keeping the parts all together! :scared:
