Good review Mike. But I think you touched on the best purpose for the sound version of the model, and that would be public train shows. I don't see any viable reason to purchase the non-sound version given that the model design is so poor.

Mike, I notice you have another stock car coupled right behind the BLIs. Any chance you could post some comparison photos? I think it would be interesting to compare tooling.

Thanks, Mike!  I'm very disappointed in the tooling.  Seeing it on a well-scenicked layout with other more detailed equipment actually makes the car look worse rather than better.

Looking at the video the solid sides are the least offensive thing about that model.  :| the ladders and roofwalk are awful...

Even though these cars were rare out west, I intended to obtain the non-moo version to support the cause and have a unique car (just like I did with the BLI covered hopper and other models).
Now that it's out and and I see just how bad it is, no thanks BLI. That's going to put a real damper on my future preorders. What were you thinking?

I wonder what it looks like inside- if they put in the correct slats, it might have looked like it was loaded with audio gear for a Rolling Stones concert.

Yeah, that video did little to help that car. I seldom bash a product as I have never put one out myself. I got thinking and this car isn't really bad except for the price. I liken it to paying $70 for an old Model Power or Bachmann car. The cars are what they are, it's the price that determines how "bad" they are. No one complains about spending 2 bucks on one of the aforementioned MP or Bachmann cars ´cause that's what they're worth.

Thank you for the video, Mike.  I also think that putting it next to other stock cars as shown in some of your video shots makes the car look even worse.

I would have to bet that seeing the hardware inside the car was the reason they made it with solid sides.
The only way around that I can think of would be to make nice slatted sides (and thinner roofwalks and ladders... ugh!)
and then play some trick of vision.  Perhaps put a thin smoked gray mylar sheet inside the sides, so that the slats would be there and the car would appear to be more see-through, but you wouldn't actually be able to see through to the other side (or see the electronics inside).  People play tricks like this with structures all the time, so that the windows a reflective or "almost" transparent, but not really.

Hate the solid sides.  It looks awful.  I wonder if it would be possible to pull the shell and put a MT or other stock car shell over it?
