Yes, because short term shareholder value is what's really important here.

Unfortunately that's the way of the corporate overlords these days.   :(

It would be interesting to see the mix of CP red and CSX blue on the locomotives though.

Chessie and the golden beaver might be cool..  8)

I am now sure my comments didn't come across the way I intended.

It is the responsibility of Management to bring to shareholders offers in the best interest of the corporation. That doesn't mean I agree a merger is a good idea, as I don't. If CP is stupid enough to over value another RR to get access to USA east coast ports to save his company, his shareholders need to do something but they (like me) won't. The board will look at it as a good moneymaker and feel they know better than the small shareholder (like me).

We know some of Corporate management teams and boards are out of touch or are in it mainly to make big money. I am not a holder of CP stock so have no idea what personal financial windfall he will make by forcing mergers, but I would bet its huge money, $10 or more million. Is CP tipping over? I have not read anything to state they are. I do know from a CP employee (conductor)neighbor that he is starting to hate a company he's loved working for 10+ years and he claims employee dissatisfaction is up. He feels a merger with BNSF would benefit the employees more than with NS or CSX. He claims he is told by BNSF employees its a great place to work. But he also understands that doesn't get CP to the USA east coast and that he feels will help CP.

With all the cuts being made in the RR business it does make sense for CP to latch on to something that makes for an improvement to the company. I don't think the merger would do that.

Pension plans put pressure on them to perform, quarter over quarter, so we're all to blame.

Looking at it on the map, KCS would be a more likely "approve-able" match by the STB. Not sure why it is not an option for CP, it just seems to me to be way more plausible than NS or CSX. They are and end to end connection in Kansas City, it would put them essentially on par with CN (or at least closer), and it would get CP into Mexico. Not sure how any of this would effect KCS's Panama Canal Railway other than just ownership change.

Of course, all this noise over NS and CSX maybe cover for just that; but I have a low tolerance for conspiracies, so probably not. Fun to put it out there...   :D

Its part of Berkshire Hathaway--so technically I don't hold any BNSF

They're taking to Twitter about it too: https://twitter.com/CanadianPacific/status/705830242301169665

I gave them my thoughts on the matter.
