so CP Leaves 2 east coast Container Ports, but now wants back in ? where is the one in Canada,Halifax ? and there is a big one at Port Newark/Elizabeth in Jersey that was served by the now sold off D&H. this is so Stooooopid its beyond comical. CP has really been taken over by morons. Spikre
Lenny, didn't know about Montreal,Thanks. thought Halifax was promoted as the closest N.A. Port to Europe in the 80s ? Spikre
CSX has opened a new intermodal yard on their line (ex NYC/PC/CR) in Valleyfield Quebec and containers are trucked to port. I hear Hunter is not too keen on ocean going containers.
Though CP reached Halifax via subsidiary Dominion Atlantic Rwy (DAR) and over trackage rights on CN, the DAR was isolated and only joined to the balance of the CP network via car ferries across the Bay of Fundy, the eastern port they walked from was St John, NB. This occurred in 1994 when they sold Montreal - St John to the Canadian-American / Eastern Maine / New Brunswick Southern.CP was making bad decisions long before current management. They actually put their 56% stake in SOO Line up for sale in the late 80's, but after no takers they, decided to buy up all remaining shares. Imagine they'd have come to regret selling it seeing as it's a pretty important route for them... you know, their only direct access to Chicago. But they're the people that sold off the old SOO/WC to the new WC because they could not see the value in those lines.
Most of the old SOO, including the DSS+A to the Sault, was sold to WC (now CN) after CP bought the eastern end of Milwaukee Road.
They let the OOCL contract go to CN ~2 years ago... that'd been a CP account since the 80's at the least. CN 148/149 to/from Port of Mtl will grow up to 200+ platforms.
Looks like it's over.http://mobile.reuters.com/article/idUSKCN0X819C
from the article "In early trade CP shares were up 3.6 percent at C$181.63. Norfolk Southern shares were down 1.3 percent at $80.46."go figure
They attribute the increase in CP stock due to the announcement in this article - http://www.theglobeandmail.com/report-on-business/canadian-pacific-abandons-efforts-to-buy-norfolk-southern/article29582913/I guess those interested in investing in CP were waiting to see what would happen...
Looking like CP's offer was too high despite NS protesting it was low ball.
