Bestine thinner/solvent

Do I really need to keep this on hand for modeling use anymore? I'm getting low, and can't find it locally now. I don't work with rubber cement as an adhesive for mechanical boards anymore. LOL! I always have 70%, 91% alcohol on hand, and acetone.
 Thanks,

The only current use I have for Bestine is cleaning the support wax off of Shapeways high-resolution 3D printer outputs (FUD and FXD). I used it frequently back when I was also in graphic arts and had to clean paste-up wax from art boards.

If you figure on buying detail parts from Shapeways, you might see about replenishing your supply. It can still be ordered from online art supply houses like Dick Blick.

Thanks Mike. Seems Jerry's Artarama doesn't list it. There's one in Stamford, CT. that my GF will be near on Saturday. I don't know if I will order from a Shapeways vendor, but you never know.

Blicks carries Bestine in their stores also as well as online, and they have a number of CT stores, so you should be able to find it there.

I placed on online order with Blick, arrived a few days later, no problems.

Jeff, no extra shipping charges for hazardous materials? I think the nearest one to me is near Hartford, CT. Not exactly close to Bethel. I'll have to scout their locations.
 Thanks all,

Nope. It came ground shipping, so no extra charges.

Bestine can be found at an art supply store.  I would Google (City name) art supplies store.  You would be surprised what out there. In the SF bay Area University Art Supplies & Blicks, Blicks I know does mail order.

For Shapeways parts I'd say quit the bestine and get yourself an ultrasonic bath. Just pour some dishwashing liquid and warm water in it and make it buzz. Heptane is bad stuff.

I keep Bestine in the garage for the sole purpose of cleaning FUD 3D printed items....nothing will clean as well as the Bestine, plain and simple...
Yes, it's harmful if swallowed, inhaled, and long term skin exposure...
SO, I neither ingest it, inhale it, or expose it to my skin, long or short term...
When soaking overnight, I use spare glass jars dedicated to this purpose/product ( we keep all of our glass foodstuff jars)

I did google "Ultrasonic Bath" and immediately found some in the $60-$70, which would be the same as buying a gallon and a half of bestine. They could be used to clean lots of other things too, so it might be time to invest in one.

I bought a quart to pour into a glass jar.  when the parts are ready I use funnel with a cloth as a filter (and part catcher) to pour the bestine back in its original container.

I don't see soap/detergent (even in ultrasonic cleaner) working as well stripping the wax as Bestine (Heptane) or Naphtha.  Yes, those are somewhat hazardous chemicals, but so are many others around you (including the gasoline you probably pump yourself into your car).  As long as you practice common sense, there should be no danger.
