CNW question
« on: January 12, 2016, 03:43:20 PM »

It's looking like I may just win a auction for a pair of Athearn bluebox SDP40s.They are custom painted for the CNW. My question is "Are they FOOBIES?" If they are they get a total repaint *,if they aren't they get patched for my Grande Valley Railway. :D

* and other things like a long ways trip through my table saw.

As usual all assistance is appreciated.

It's a bit beyond the period I'm interested in, but it appears to be a foob.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMD_SDP40

Wiki lists 20 SDP40s being built between 1966 and 1970, with none going to the C&NW.

Funny, just saw the last line in the wiki entry about the unit donated to the Minnesota Transportation Museum. That's two blocks from where I work. Drive by it every day on the way home. It's in an old GN roundhouse.

But the unit in question isn't there, it's in Osceola, WI.

Right. But the roundhouse is right where it's always been.  :D

What I meant was, the museum is in the roundhouse. But if we're going to be all word policey, I guess I should say the museum is "in and around" the roundhouse (and other locations).

Anyone reading your post would think that the unit is at the roundhouse in St. Paul.  I just wanted to clarify.

 :)
  SDP40, 20 built:
  8 to GN/BN
  12 to NdeM
no actual relation to the later Amtrak SDP40F.
  GN/BN also got some SDP45s,but no FP45s.
rode behind Milwaukee FP45s on 2 different trains
before Amtrak, the U.P. "City of Every Where".
always liked the Athearn NYC SDP40 model.

There's an auction up for a New Haven SDP40. It just looks like it should have been. :D I could understand if Irv did these but they are both custom repaints.

I thought they were foobies but from the pics they look almost to good to not leave them CNW. Well I will know by 11:30 am tomorrow if they are mine or not.

(oops almost forgot)  Thanks for the help guys I appreciate it.

Hilarious. I thought we were talking Chicago & North Western. That's the only CNW I was familiar with.

BTW, reporting mark for the Carolina & Northwestern is CRN.

Jim

When Southern bought NS in '74, they merged Carolina and North Western into NS, leaving just NS.  Well, when Southern and Norfolk and Western merged a few years later, Southern renamed NS back to Carolina and North Western.

btw, the CRN RS11 was the only RS11 on the entire Southern system.
