Looks promotional/marketing. Just another in their series of one-offs.

 :?
maybe NS and GE will be using this as a Demo to Rebuild 20 year+ locos ?
or they are going to Display it at a Rail Equipment Supply Show ?
was really expecting a "Joke" version of the CP scheme !!
  nice looking Loco.

First thing that came to mind for me was a GP60M painted in the Maersk paint scheme.

Demo or not, that definitely appears to be what this is.

DC traction C40-9W rebuilt to (basically) an AC4400. Special paint job highlights "DC to AC" on the cab.

NS 4001 will be painted in this scheme as well. 4000 is currently back in the paint booth getting some things touched up. From what I've heard it has to do with their logos needing to be black, to stick with their copyright on their name.

Paint scheme aside, I'm curious what the loco looks like on the other side.  (i.e. where the huge spotting difference exists between older DC and AC GEs).

I'm sure that they have the same large inverter box area behind the conductor's side of the cab that all AC locos do.  BNSF's Dash-9 AC conversions do, and I can't imagine NS did anything different as there's not really any other place you'd want to put that equipment at.

Functionally, and appearance-wise, these differ little from AC4400CWs.  NS never ran those, but our Dash-9 conversions look very nearly the same as our AC4400CW fleet, except BNSF went with C4-style A1A trucks.

Norfolk Southern originally posted a photo on www.railpictures.net, but took it down when the unit went in for paint touchups.  IIRC, the posted picture was of left side.  Not that it helps you now.  But maybe the reposting will be of that side.

Edit: Someone copied the original NS photo and put it on their web site. http://members4.boardhost.com/OtherMichRRs/msg/1450157724.html

Modifications as noted by Chris Toth's  NSDash9 site

Quote
Units were rebuilt by American Motive Power, Inc. (AMP) in Dansville, NY, under contract with GE. The
rebuilding included conversion to AC traction utilizing GE electrical components, new electrical cabinet,
replacement of the existing crew cab and low short hood with a new GE widenose and cab, and additional
weight was added to bring the units up to 432,000 pounds when fully loaded with supplies.

You must've stopped listening after 2008 when they got their first AC locos. They've been riding the AC sinewave ever since.

I didn't know BNSF was doing this too.  Any pics of those anywhere?
