Some enterprising lyricist could use this for a sequel to "The Man Who Never Returned."

I always wonder why, along with his sandwich, his wife didn't hand him some money?  Maybe she didn't really want him back?  Or wasn't too bright?  I remember hearing that song growing up, in the 60s, and even as a kid it didn't sound right.

The song itself actually started as a political statement, involving a real fare increase and city council election.

My father was a huge Kingston Trio fan, and this song was a constant in our household. I think I still have the original but well-worn album somewhere in the boxes of Dad's things.

I always had the same thought until I realized the obvious: because it would ruin the plot! :D As for the political part, it's probably the only reason anyone remembers George O'Brien, and probably landed him more fame than the guy who beat him! Edit: Except that in looking him up, I now realize that the name was fictionalized; the real candidate's first name was Walter.

My father was a huge Kingston Trio fan, and this song was a constant in our household.

My parents were also quite fond of the Kingston Trio. Also, the tune of The Wreck of Ol' 97 was one of the few tunes my dad could strum out on a guitar, so it's one of those things that brings back memories made too early in life to have anything left but the feeling attached to them.

Well then you just have to stop tying the throttle lever with a rope - they they will stay put.   (At least that is what the news media was reporting.)
