I like how the track emphasizes that this is an N-scale model, and not O scale, or a prototype shot.

Max displayed his model at the Railway Modellers Meet in Burnaby this weekend. The model, viewed live, is unbelievable and is a perfect jewel. What struck me most was how small the model really is; having watched the progress of construction on the railwire I don't think you get a real sense of how small the model and its components are. Many of the parts that were discussed in detail and illustrated with big clear photos on his thread are so fine and tiny that they are barely visible in 'real life', but close examination reveals that they are there, and perfectly rendered. Have look at the Max's photos of the finished model and then try to imagine that the whole thing, from pilot beam to to the rear end of the tender, is smaller than your thumb. He had a really nice Northern Pacific type radial roofed boxcar to pull along behind it too. That would be a nice resin casting project...

The individual components are amazing bits of workmanship but then the volume of them to complete a whole locomotive! :o  Perseverance!  8)

If it was reported, I missed it.  How did you do at the NMRA convention?

A search on SP&S 0-6-0 brought up - nothing.  A search on just SP&S found - nothing.

It wasn't reported.  I didn't want to make a big show of it.

But I did pretty darn well, and I'm happy.  Here's the run-down:

1st Place Scratchbuilt Steam
The William J Lenoir Award (a special NMRA award for scratchbuilt steam)
The Railroad Model Craftsman Outstanding Modeling Award
People's Choice First Place - Locomotive
People's Choice Second Place - Photo Match (I wasn't really entering for this, but they liked how
well my model matched against a similarly posed photo of the prototype).

Thank you for asking.

Pretty darn well?  I would say it sounds like you shut out the competition.  Congratulations!

Thanks to Nkalanaga for resurrecting this stream so I could have the honor of reading it all.  I kept thinking this looks real nice and then I would realize I'm reading an N-Scale forum.  It just blows me away that anyone could get such detail at this scale from scratch without a whole cadre of specialist behind them.

It actually is encouraging me on to continue my own scratch build of a house.  I have spent hours trying to build up some shutters with slivers of card stock and I keep asking myself if it is worth it.  Won't all this detail get lost? Why bother.  After seeing your detail on this locomotive I'm thinking it will be worth the effort.

Hot damn Max!

I'd call that a "resounding victory".

I'd also call it incredibly well deserved.

Congratulations Max!!  I feel that anything less would have been a sham.  It was an honour to have seen it in person at our meet last spring.

Congratulations Max!  I know you that didn't build this model to win contests and get awards, but it is still nice to see you get that well deserved recognition.

Thank you, guys!

Pete, you are dead right about not building something like this just to win an award.  3-1/2 years of one's life should be spent doing something you just love doing.

I think that the RMC award means the most to me.  Not only do I have the utmost respect for that publication and all it has stood for in terms of craftsmanship in model railroading, but it is a "general" award.  They chose it from every model in the room, not just locomotives.

Congrats on mopping up the larger scale competition!
Now seeking Pacific NW N scalers to create a Modutrak-style modular club featuring NP's shared mainline between Seattle and Portland. PM me if interested.

Congrats for the awards for the finest N scale locomotive I have ever seen.

Well deserved.
