Electro Motive SW1 versus SC1

Is there any visual difference between the cast frame switcher and the welded frame? I can only find photos of the welded frame.

What's an SC1?

IIRC, there may have been a subtle difference between the SC and SW near the steps, I'd have to take a look.  But those are totally different locomotives than the SW-1.

Can you clarify what you're asking?

 I can't find an SC1, but here's what the "Second Diesel Spotter's Guide" says about the SC, SW, and SW1:

The SC and SW were built from 5-36 to 1-39, and used the 201-A engine.  "The only difference between the SW and the SC is the frame, welded on the SW and cast on the SC.  Only a fairly close visual inspection will detect this difference."  So, from a modeler's viewpoint, they are identical.

The SW1 was built from 1-39 to 11-53, using the 567 and 567A engines.  It was the replacement for the SC/SW, and had the same 600 HP.  It has a single stack, where their picture of the SC shows two stacks.  Quoting again, "Lack of small louvers on the side of the hood and the single stack distinguish this model from 201-A-engine predecessors.  The hood is also noticeable shorter."

I'm attempting to model the SC using an SW 1. I read that one difference was a single off center stack on the SC. That's from a Wikipedia article so I don't know how accurate it is.

Yeah, that's what I was guessing.  You have the stack already and the SC has three small vents on the side of the hood.  Also, the top of the hood on the SC is much flatter than the SW-1.  I think the hood doors are much different too.

But ultimately what make this hard is that the hood on the SC doesn't taper back towards the cab like the SW-1.  This creates a totally different cab window and door arrangement.

The SC is funny. It looks like a later EMD switcher, but so many of the details are slightly different (like Jason points out).

There's an operable one that my friends are around frequently.

Frank, when Rapido came out with the n scale SW1 recently, I had the same idea, to modify it to represent an ATSF SC 2151 class. Comparing the model with proto photos made me realize it's a lost cause, at least in N scale, see below. It could be the model, but there seem to be just too many differences for this particular conversion...

 :?
  is the 206 a Repowered with a 567 unit ?
  a number of the Winton powered units got 567s or scrapped as they aged
  in the 50s.

I don't find any reference to a SC1.  It seems to be referred to as the SC, possibly since there was never a SC2...

PRR's

NYC's

CGW's

  not sure what that PRR unit is/was ?
  {but never seen referances to PRR owning any Winton Powered EMDs .}
 { could that be a wreck rebuild of an SW1 ?}
  EDIT-- figures that PRR had 1 Winton powered EMD switcher.
            also was the 1st PRR End Cab switcher.
        from the 12/15/60 PRR Roster Summery info matches Jason's info,except
       it was Repowered with a 567 in 1956.
      shipped as 3908 then renumbered during 1942 to 5911.{opps hit the wrong number,sorry}
     during 1960  the 8511 was a GP7.
    but renumbering for the PC merger wasnt covered by this Roster.
    unit was rebuilt to an "Almost" SW1.
    FWIW PRR had 84 SW1s,maybe the second largest fleet behind NYCs 100+ .
   also Odd was PRR ordering the SW before any Baldwin or Alco End Cab Switchers

Notice the much more gradual hood taper on the Pennsy unit than either the NYC or CGW unit. And no three vents, different stack(s), etc.

 :)
  late SW1s had the single taper sloped hood.
  PRR had Late SW1s with that single sloped taper.
  will check a PRR roster later,{still don't think they
  had any Winton Powered EMD locos/switchers.}
   figures they had just 1,got to luv the Pennsy !!
   so after rebuilding in 1956 add this unit to the
   other 84 PRR SW1s.

PPR had an SW 3908 that was renumbered to 5911 in 1942.  It then lost it's Winton engine in 1956.

That picture looks like and SW with a new hood.  I wonder if there was another renumber sometime after getting the new engine but I can't find anything.

edit:  I found this here:

Quote
#3908 was EMC construction number 680 as part of a one unit order from Pennsylvania Railroad (Order E170). #3908 would be constructed with the standard Winton model 201A eight cylinder engine, having an 8" bore by 10" stroke (which multiplied by the eight cylinders, equalled 4021 cubic inch / 335 cubic feet displacement). Horsepower rating was 600. EMC called this a "SW" model, as it was constructed with a welded frame as opposed to the "SC" which has a cast frame. The electrical systems, generator and traction motors came from General Electric.

    In 1942, Pennsylvania Railroad would renumber #3908 to #5911. In 1958, this locomotive would be re-engined with an EMD 567A V6, which had the same horsepower rating.

    Upon the creation of Penn Central (from the merger of Pennsylvania and New York Central Railroads) on February 1, 1968, #5911 would be renumbered #8511. As this locomotive was retired in April of that year, it would only carry her PC number for about two months.
