Changing Couplers on Bachmann 10,000 Gal. Tank Cars?
« on: November 04, 2015, 09:52:20 PM »

Will Accumates fit in the coupler pockets on the latest Bachmann 10,000 gallon tank cars? I don't have any cars yet, but if I can convert Bachmann's oversized couplers to Accumates, I might pick up a few tank cars.

Thanks for any help.

Hmm... those Bachmann
couplers look... look...
swollen...

Two scientists create a teleportation ray, and they try it out on a cricket. They put the cricket on one of the two teleportation pads in the room, and they turn the ray on.
The cricket jumps across the room onto the other pad.

Yes. Accumates are a simple swap.

I changed the entire underframe to Intermountain frames....

I just bought a Bachmann 3 dome "Cooks paint" car that I will do the same conversion.

The Bachmann car is well done. Swapping in AccuMates or BLI couplers will work. The trucks are T-Frame and prototypical, yet technically not appropriate for the prototype.  Swapping in FVM wheels improves the appearance greatly.

Before:

Opened up the coupler box:

Accumate placed in:

Result - accumate on right, Bmann XL coupler on left:

One thing on this car that I did not experience on the NE caboose or the other few Bachmann cars I have - If I tightened the coupler box screw all the way the Accumate could not move in the box. I loosened the screw a bit and then the coupler worked fine - I will probably put some very thin shims in there so I can tighten the screw.

You could also drop McHenry couplers in their place, they are not as big as the Bmanns, and are about the same size as Accumates and look way better than both... Think Type E coupler.

True.

I know this is a matter of opinion, but I think the Mchenry's are also too big. It was a great concept but I wish they made them a little smaller.

 :?
those arnt "T" Section trucks, they look closer to ARA "U" Section trucks,
but there were a number of trucks that came under that description.
the springs look way to tall, but it is a nice looking truck.

I bought some Mchenry's when they first came out - for evaluation.

I have a bunch of them, which you can have whenever I get around to pulling them. 8)

:D I am Ok with that lol!
But its only an observation, I like how they look, but to me all N couplers are way too big...
What kills me is I've probably spent a $100 or more on MT couplers, and they are the ones that give me the most problems....
It doesn't help that in some cases N scale is like a miniature O-27, cars ride way too high, couplers are huge, wheel flanges are big too (this has been remedied in recent years.) some things like ride height can be fixed but if you're like me how do you fix the issue if you don't like MT couplers? I don't even care for Z scale MTs... I'd rather have AZL or the Bowser Bucklers on my Z equipment, but all I can get Z scale coupler wise for N is MT...
Oh well.... I'll just wait till Sargent Engineering makes N scale couplers....  :D

Is there an easy way of fitting MTL couplers to these?

Without having seen the Bachmann tank cars, I would imagine the coupler box would have to be cut off and sanded smooth. Then you can put a Micro-Trains #1023 coupler on. You may have to shim the coupler box to get it at the proper height.

Hmm... too much work
for me...
