Yes.  I have a policy to "fess up when you mess up"... it saves a lot of time trying to remember what fibs you told to different people.

I feel pretty crappy about the ordeal..

In the past I've helped out whenever I could and never had an issue with lost mail.


I do have another Hudson but for all the good it did last time ..

Taking the time to remove the ladders , putting them into an envelope, putting a stamp on and dropping into the mailbox doesn't work , I may as well tossed them into the trash.

USPS deals with millions of pieces of mail a dayl Bad things can happen. Not sure how you mailed it but it might be possible that the envelope got chewed up on one of the automatic sorting machines. Maybe it wasn't stiff enough, or the uneven thickness of the ladders caused the jam. Or it could have just fell behind some machine or under a conveyer belt and it will remain there safely until someone finds the envelope 30 years from now and it will then be delivered.  I heard of things like that.

Not to say that this isn't right, but it can happen.

Randy, when I send something small in a First Class envelope,  I usually tape it inside an old greeting card.  The card provides enough protection for whatever it is usually.  In the case of these ladders, if they were loose in the envelope, they have enough profile that they might have hung up a machine sorter. 

I expect that sometime in the next 6 months I'll get the mangled remains of an envelope with the "We're Sorry" memo from the post office.

If you're willing, grab one of those old sympathy cards, or a baby announcement, or last year's Christmas card, and try again.  If they're still a little "tall" then put two pieces of cork roadbed on either side of them, then tape that inside the card.  I bet they'll get here in no time.  You'll get extra points if the card makes me laugh out loud.

And I'll HAPPILY reimburse for the card, the stamp, and even the trip to the Post Office (assuming you don't rely on an Alaskan bush flyer... that could get pricey...)

OK , I'll take another chance. I'll remove them tonight and do what you suggest.

Again, I have a good job and a couple bucks isn't going to hurt me , as I stated before my payback is reading the forums and this is a small way of giving back.

If you're using an envelope to mail a small object, its very important to write DO NOT MECHANICALLY SORT or HAND SORT ONLY and make sure it is understood. The sorting machines will absolutely mangle anything small in an envelope. Found that out the hard way!

If still needed, you might consider to replace with a pair off the Bachmann N2-8-0.

The photo on their website is rather poor, but the tread count and width is about the same and the casting is nice and crisp with even outside tread rivet details.  Hard to go wrong for a mere $1/ plus tax & shipping.

And this method worked out great for the DPM windows that Lee mailed to me a few weeks ago.  I received the windows quickly and safely, plus I got a free piece of Lee's artwork on the face of his greeting card.
