Need help identifying a drop center flat make

If the car is based on a CNW prototype, it would have to be cars 48013, 48015 which aren't a perfect match.  I'd say the car is generic enough to represent several different roads.

These cars are somewhat interesting that they weren't built until 1967 and rode on roller bearing trucks.

How do you know 28" wheels would be unprototypical?

NYC did have at least one very similar car.

edit:  Here's the shop diagram of the NYC car if you want to compare it to the model.  The wheels are listed as 28"

I stand corrected, thanks Jason!
That should help lowering the car, just like the prototype.
But if they are "relatively modern" sixties and later cars, I guess wouldn't need one.
The diagram you posted has a 1942 date.
Anyone care to guess about the build dates for the other prototypes?

I agree that the GHQ kit is likely a generic model, but the MR Article has a photo of CNW 48007 which looks very close, with matching ribs, solid bearing trucks and vertical brake staffs. Hard to tell if there is a difference in length...

Okay, good to know.  The ORER lumps 48007 with 480011 which has vertical brake wheels and a heavily modified deck.  Which MR is that article in?  I have a stash somewhere, maybe I have it.

Here are two of these cars I decalled.  One Penn Central and one Conrail.  I personally substituted BLMA grab irons for those included with the kit.  I still need to add brake stands.  They are done (removed from MTL caboose end rails), I just still need to goo them on.  From the looks of it, I will need to remove some material from the bottom so the trucks can swing more.  Thanks.

The trucks that were used on the ones I bought had offset centers that pull the inner wheels away from the drop in the frame.ill document what I did later if you guys think it turned out ok.  I was able to file the bolster down to about 0.020" above the center beam. It dropped the car significantly so now I have to machine away some material where the coupler mounts.  I also mounted z 905's in the coupler pockets.  I am also waiting for 28" wheelsets...

For my PC and CR flatcars, I used BLMA friction bearing trucks, MTL 2004's and FVM regular (normal flange) 28" metal wheels.  If you look at the prototype, these have a high ride height.  The PC car is from MSB's PC color guide and the CR car is from rrpicturearchives.  I have seen the CR car in person in 1989 also.  The PC car has 27 individual decals from 4 different Microscale sets.  The CR car has 27 decals from three different Microscale sets.  I have invested a ton of time in these cars, but I am happy with the results.  If anyone is interested, PM me and I can give you specifics for the decals.  Thanks.

I have been working on lowering this car to see if I can get it closer to the drawing above.  I don't think it can get close to 8" off the railhead...

This is the model after lowering compared to the second original.



Here is the bolster height difference. The original was nearly 1.5' scale too high.



The last picture is after I machined out the coupler pocket to raise the coupler.  Not perfect but close enough to operate.  I had to machine about half the original thickness away.  There is about 0.040" of thread engagement left for the coupler.  One could probably get closer by gluing the coupler in place, but, nah...



I will get an additional 2" scale of lowering when the 28" wheels come...

Here is one of my two that I modified into New Haven transformer cars.  I shaved the four ribs off the sides and added three back.  I also used the MTL (Kadee at the time) brakestands from the caboose railings.  The trucks were kitbashed from Con-Cor trucks.  It runs on 28" wheels, which were NWSL before being upgraded to FVMs.  Aquataur drop grab irons on the end sills.  Everything else from what I remember is from the standard kit components.
