Hi peteski,

you may not have much reason to believe me,
the Kato motor is a lot better than the Yugo motor.

however... it is not a pointedly strong magnet which is not a case for it.
the rest of the motor is properly done and it will run well.

find a good replacement magnet and it is impressive.

overall, the motor and loco are similar.
could be better and not at all bad.

I believe you Victor!  It is just that motor looks so similar to the crappy Yugo version.  I now wonder if the Yugo motor was a copy of Kato's?

If you can take the motor out of the chassis and if you have an airbrush , put some 99% isopropyle alcohol in a bottle and spray the heck out of it , the armature the windings the brushes, everything until then alcohol runs clear , and put a drop of oil on the armature at each end, and put a couple wires to it with a 9. Volt battery,  and if it works then your in business and if not a winding may have fried and then it's replacement time . I have had good luck with this method for oldies but goody locos . Hope this helps

Thank you for the picture Victor, that's the one.  After evaluating my skills or lack thereof I am going to hunt up a newer mechanism and motor for this shell. The old one was never what you could have called a great runner but I did like it a lot. If anyone can use the old mechanism please let me know and I will donate it for parts or whatever use you can make of it. Everyone's comments were helpful in making this decision and I do truly appreciate your help.

Although from the Pennsy persuasion, I have to say the NYC Hudson is a beautiful locomotive. Long and low to fit through those tight clearances on the Water Level Route, the Hudson is rather sexy. 

The Con-Cor model is an example of an oldie but goodie from the early days of N Scale (early 1970s?).

           I still have my original NYC one with the metal side rod's. It looked  great in its day, but operationally it was a real Dog. Interment pick up eventually led to the locomotive sparking like a tinplate steamer old Marx or Lionel with a pickup shoe or rollers. When it began to spark I simply stored it away for possible collection purpose's and was glad to see that Con Cor redesigned it (or Kato did) into a better locomotive although I did like the look of the metal side rods better. Nate Goodman (Nato). Salt Lake. Utah.

I had this happen about 25 years ago, and I replaced the stock motor with a single shaft Kato flat can motor I got mail order.  I recall I had to cut a lug off, and attached the motor with Silicone sealant...

I have a little piece of steel with a slot in it that I used in a vise to support the worm, along with a hammer and a bit of drill rod to drive the shaft out.

I dug the beast out; the motor is glued to the old motor support on the left side of the frame

the b-mann spectrum motor from the 2-8-0 is a good substitute as well.

It is a 1 1/2" piece of cold-rolled 1"x1/8" steel strip, Victor,  ground a bit thinner at the slot...

Ha!   The first time I did it, I used a steel octagon box.. the type you use for a junction box in
house wiring.  I cut a slot, and then ground the metal a little thinner there, so I could hang the motor
by the worm in the slot.   Then, using a small wire brad as the punch, just whacked the shaft out.
(Needed to use a few brads, because they aren't hardened and they bend!)   

A bit of drill rod is a much better idea!

It was a little barbaric, but it worked.  I only needed the worm anyway.  I didn't care what happened to
the motor (and the same is true in this 4-6-4 case).

But now I use a wheel puller.  I guess I outgrew my barbarian days.

Color me barbarian, I like the idea. Maybe there is hope yet, a 2-8-0 motor isn't outside the price range I'd spend. I will still give it gratis to anyone who can use it.
