On a semi-related note, I got my 8-pack of MTL Pennsy H31s from Chuck yesterday.

We've already discussed in other threads how small the H31 class really was on Pennsy, and yet they account now for 9 of my roughly 40 or so 1956-era operating hoppers (or 9 of 22 PRR hoppers).  So, the question is...

1)  Keep 'em and run 'em (which means weather them), 'cause frankly, in a moving train, one 2-bay hoper looks like another.  And, of course they'll operate flawlessly.
2)  Split 'em (keep a few and sell the rest...  That probably decreases the overall collector value).
3)  Hold on to them 'till the market price rises...

Honestly, I'm leaning toward #1.  It's my railroad...   Someday after I've gotten my little slice of Colorado finished, I want to go back to addressing making the JD more like the Middle Division, and long, long strings of Pennsy 2 and 4 bay hoppers behind M1s constitute my idea of the Middle Division.

Much depends on several career "things" set to happen over the next year, but once those get sorted out--and assuming I still have a basement--I think it's time to build a cockpit-style JD.  These hoppers, though a minority class, would still help set exactly the tone I'm after.

Can I be forgiven for over-indulging in a minority car class?  I promise to say ten Hail Pennsys and make the Sign of the Keystone...

I have two Kadee/MTL Pennsy H31 hoppers.  One from the original five-pack decades ago with the CK, and one from a Tex-n-Rails special run with the SK.  I have three each of the two Boswer hoppers and eventually will finish the one Bachmann GLd.  If I expand that roster, it most likely will be with the Bowser models.

I'm getting the set from my LHS (Skipgear).  Ratios be damned, they look good and are nearly correct so screw it.  May The Keystone forgive me though, I'm also looking at transition era C&O stuff.

How about some real meat reefers, rather than produce reefers foobing in slaughterhouse schemes?  Maybe if I refer to them as bacon reefers I could drum up even more support for the new body style?

I have 40 of the original Kadee H31 hoppers. I think they look pretty good once I dullcote them.

I thing that with Rapido just coming out with a real meat reefer greatly reduced the chances of MT tooling one up. Too bad because assuming that it would have been made to a standard similar to the current reefers, it could have been superior to the Rapido offering. But I shouldn't really make that judgement basing it strictly on the Rapido reefer car I fondled at the Springfield show. Maybe they reworked it to get rid of the problems.

First thing that would have to go on a new MTL reefer are the clunky oversized and nondescript prop bars.  Atlas and InterMountain reefers show that you can have operating hatches and not have O scale sized prop bars and hinges on models of produce reefers.
