N scale steam in MR

I started noticing, perhaps 3 years ago,
that MR was putting more and more semi-craftsman pieces into their magazine.  They are still not RMC
in that regard, but I  think they are moving in the right direction.

I've noticed the same thing (and considering our occasional correspondence on this matter, I assume MR actually paid you!). However, I would not want MR to turn into RMC, with the pedantic tone and the hype of "prototype modeler" meets full of half-done projects. There are very good reasons RMC went under. I think, though, that MR is moving into where it was under Westcott, a very good general interest mag for the whole hobby.

And I can remember when the magazines all agreed that "N scale would never be a modeler's scale", just for running long trains or building tiny layouts.

Unfortunately, I think a lot of people still think that, whether they come right out and say it or not.
I hate crusades, but my pitch to put that article in MR was at least in some small part a crusade to show
people that that simply isn't true.  Now excuse me while I go finish putting windshield wipers and hand-made
grab irons on my E7       (the crusade continues!)

While everyone is reading Max's article, has anyone noticed the feature on David Miller's very nicely done Z scale layout?

Max's article in the PRR T&HS magazine on the GHQ L1 many years ago gave me the courage to finish my own kit, but more importantly, showed me the difference that really well-written instructions along with good photos make on a project.   Max has been my inspiration not only for pushing the envelope on myself, but on following that lead on my own kit instructions.

Just delighted to see this in MR.  And it's not 'just another' N steam article, it's one of those classics that is beyond the scale it is done in.

I sure did.   And I liked the piece on assembling and detailing the wood kit by Richard Snyder.
The Red Oak layout segment was good too.  Nice touch making a home-made stencil to paing the R X R on
the road.

I saw that.  I think it was discussed years ago on the A-board, but don't remember seeing anyone actually try it.  They have a lot of good modeling this month.  Maybe a revitalized RMC will improve MR as well, through the increased competition.

Max,  Wow! Great article. I followed your thread with lots of interest. Amazingly was blown away when I saw it in person. Your work is top notch. I would be remiss if I did not add my congratulations. I am sure it was worth the wait! I do look forward to your next masterpiece.

Thank you, Rick.   It means a lot coming from a detail-oriented SP&S guy such as yourself!
(When I have the guts, I'll take the gold lettering off it and replace it with white      which I already
did on the #700  Forgive me!  I was an SP&S newb and I didn't know any better.. HA HA!)
